I have a bone to pick

I have heard multiple tv programs as well as radio talking about Sydneys 'We Will Rock You' as the premier. I would like to point out now that 'We Will Rock You' played in melbourne for a considerable amount of time.
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS??

If someone could clear thiis up for me that would be great.

Re: We Will Rock You

I guess it's the NSW premiere

I've seen that a lot with shows... ie SA premiere

I agree that can get precious

premier (for this theatre etc)

And prior to Melbourne it was on in Perth (I saw it in early June), and of course it was on prior to that in other places, notably London.

A premiere event could be the first time it plays in the world, in the country, in the state, in the city, in the particular theatre...the sphere of reference depends on who's doing the advertising.

Of course, the simple answer to the question you ask above is that the TV and radio are wrong: Sydney's premier is Bob Carr.

Cheers,
Craig

Re: We Will Rock You

The production of We Will Rock You playing in Sydney is the Australian Premiere Production.

IE - We Will Rock You has never played in Australia before and this production is the first.

No matter how many places it goes, it can and will be refered to this as it is correct.

Re: We Will Rock You

But how does that differ to the productions that have already gone on around the country?
Or is this one an entirely different one to those and if so is it sanctioned by Master Elton?
Or is the producer(s) putting it on called "Australian Premiere Production" and hence trying to use semantics to gain some sort of edge?

Any knowledgeable person knows that it isn't the Australian premiere of the show as that has already happened a long time ago.

Some elucidation please.

Sure, this particular production might be calling itself the Australian Premiere Production, but the fact remains that they travelled to a lot of other places around Australia and performed there first. Sydney is last on the list.

Re: We Will Mock You

its just like any other musical guys....everyone has their own premiere no matter what state/country/world it is in....

and i was told some changes were made to the sydney production...just to update it a bit....but i could be wrong on that

Re: We Will Mock You

Is this a legit question or some sort of Sydney-bashing attempt? I'll say the same thing again.

The Louise Withers & Associates production of WE WILL ROCK YOU is the Australian Premiere PRODUCTION.

Nowhere does it say this is the Australian Premiere SEASON.

In Perth, this production was the AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE PRODUCTION. In Melbourne, it was the AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE PRODUCTION. Guess what? In Brisbane, it was also the AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE PRODUCTION. And in Sydney, shock horror, it is still the same production, hence it is the AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE PRODUCTION.

The AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE SEASON was in Perth and nobody can take it away.

When the Lion King goes to Melbourne, it will still be the Australian Premiere Production and so on.

Re: We Will Mock You

I guess it's just that they make such a huge deal about it being in sydney. they make it sound as if it hasnt been anywere else (in australia)

Re: We Will Mock You with bluster

As was said before, playing with semantics, as well as using a shirt-load of license.

Dictionary.com and my hardcopy Oxford dictionary concur with the meaning;

pre·miere or pre·mière ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pr-mîr, -myâr)
n.
The first public performance, as of a movie or play.

v. pre·miered, or pre·mièred pre·mier·ing, or pre·mièr·ing pre·mieres or pre·mières
v. tr.
To present the first public performance of.

v. intr.
To have the first public performance.
To make a first appearance in a public performance.

adj.
First or paramount; premier.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[French première, from feminine of premier, first. See premier.]
Usage Note: In entertainment contexts, the verb premiere has become the standard way of saying “to introduce to the public,” or “to be introduced to the public.” Since it seems always to imply newness, premiere is frequently used in advertising. Thus a movie can premiere in selected theaters, and a year later it can “premiere” to a different audience on television. The verb first came out in the 1930s and acceptance of it in general usage has been slow. In 1969, only 14 percent of the Usage Panel accepted it. Nineteen years later, however, when asked to judge the example The Philharmonic will premiere works by two young Americans, 51 percent of the Panelists accepted this usage. But only 10 percent of the Panelists in the 1988 survey accepted the extension of the verb to contexts outside of the entertainment industry, as in Last fall the school premiered new degree programs.

premiere

adj : preceding all others in time; "the premiere showing" [syn: premier] n : the first public performance of a play or movie v 1: be performed for the first time; "We premiered the opera of the young composer and it was a critical success" [syn: premier] 2: perform a work for the first time [syn: premier]

As best as I can see a play as such can only premiere once.

However as was stated this is the Premiere Production being the first production of the show and it is the same one which is travelling around the countryside, and therefore it IS the Premeiere Production but not the premiere show as that one was THE very first one which showed a long time ago.

As I said at the beginning - semantics!

Re: We Will Mock You with bluster

but I think you will find that the Australian Premiere SEASON was in fact, in Melbourne. where it opened in August 2003, playing through to March 2004.
It then played Perth, May-June-July 2004,
Brisbane July-August-October 2004
and now Sydney, as of November 2004

All of the above, part of the Australian Premiere PRODUCTION. That is, the FIRST production of the show in Australia.
