Amateur Musical Theatre
Mon, 11 Oct 2004, 03:23 pmHello All,
I am interested into getting into some amateur musical theatre productions. Does anyone have any advice as to how I could go about doing this? I'm more interested in being part of the chorus, or a more minor background role, but still be involved in the singing and dancing aspects of it.
Thanks!

Re: Amateur Musical Theatre
Keep an eye on the audition section of this site as most am music theatre productions are advertised on here! Doesn't seem to be anything at the moment but keep looking!

Re: Amateur Musical Theatre
If you are in Perth try Playlovers. They do at least one musical a year and pretty good by any ones standards. They have been known to outdo the professionals. Think Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, Into The Woods.
They are listed on this site. If you are interested look them up.Neris wrote:

Re: Amateur Musical Theatre
Amateur theatre is like the job market, 80 percent of jobs are not advertised as they are given to friend or interested people that have the necessary qualifications through "the old boys network" which nowadays would be "networking", so a lot of roles are worked out before auditions occur.
So you will see audition notices appear on this web site but if you are wanting to get involved from a beginners point, do some research here on this web site.
Use the Search Site facility to look up old posts of "musicals", "auditions", "getting started", "youth theatre" etc to look up what has already been said as it will have names of theatre groups that do musicals, hints of how to audition for musicals, what songs to sing and not to sing, where to get experience.
Use the Companies feature to look up what companies are in your area and go to the companies web sites to see what shows they do and what shows they have on. Go to their shows and stay back after the performance and talk to them about what you would like to do and see if they can keep you advised of what shows are coming up that would suit you.
You may need to be members of several theatre groups to find several shows a year that you would like to do. It will get you a newsletter for advance notices of what is coming up.
Most amateur theatre groups release their season dates and play list towards the end of the year so that is when you should be looking to see what is on for you.
You need to plan up to one year ahead, get out and talk to people, be prepared to put up with some things to allow you to get experience from theatre groups and then go and find what you would like to do.
If you have talent and are proactive, you will succeed and have fun and enjoyment.
