Hi Guys,

Spare my daughter and myself a minute if you can. My daughter is currently doing year 10 (year 11 drama/ music) and has lots of experience in musical productions, plays, singing, training workshops etc ...

She would like to attend WAAPA or NIDA (wouldn't everyone) but we realise entry is audition based...(which means nothing is certain , right?)

Questions if we may..

1)Does the resume count for much or is it purely an audition process ?

2) What other performing arts courses are available in Australia (esp Musical Theatre)?

3)Are there any other entry requirements?

If any one has had experience of these courses or general advice that would be appreciated too

Thanks

Re: studying Mus theatre in Aus

hi

just some info you might want

1, yes it is all audition based and the resume doesnt really count for anything...its a good idea thought to have a performance based resume and then attach that to the application form or simply write down the details on the application form itself...

2. NIDA doesnt actually offer a fulltime musical theatre course...they have workshops and one year certificate courses but there is nothing at NIDA that offers a diploma or degree in performance...NIDA does do musical theatre for its full time students but they only do one for the full three years. The best bet is to go to WAAPA as it has the leading australian course in musical theatre and performance studies

3. There are no strict requirements for auditioning. Basically some unwritten rules are that they like their students to be alittle older (about 20 minimum) but this is always open...also they like their students to have performed in a few theatrical performances other than school...

4. In Sydney the actors college of theatre and television has a fulltime one year course for musical theatre as well as a 2 year course for singing. The conservatorium of music offers performance for musical theatre and cabaret and I think that is a part time three year course but i am not sure...

5. However it might be an idea to simply contact as many institutions you can find and see what they do offer...

Hope this has helped

Re: studying Mus theatre in Aus

Hi

Last year I completed a certificate in Music theatre and a cert in Classical voice at WAAPA.

basically in the audition, if they see what they like they'll have you. you may be very good but if they want something else or don't like you as a package they won't have you.

It's very subjective.

I've never auditioned for NIDA so I don't know if it is the same there.

Some places where you can study M.th. are as follows:

National Theatre in Melb. has a course which starts july each year. it is growing in popularity and has a showcase at the end.

University of Ballarat: 3yr BA in Musical Th.

There is also a uni in NSW which has something on the auditions page regarding their certif in M.th.

The more you audition for, the better your chances.

I hope this has legnthened your list of places.

I could only offer two bits of advice :

You don't NEED to do a course in Musical theatre to work in the industry. Plenty of ppl don't and are.

Second. Believe in your own ability and don't stop enjoying performing. that's what it's all about. not auditions.

Good luck and don't give up.

Re: studying Mus theatre in Aus

Hi,

I think most of your questions have been answered. The performance industry is very tough to crack make sure your daughter wants to do it and follow it through for the right reasons, it pretty much needs to be such a strong desire to perform that nothing else matters. determination and persistance is what is going to get you through, a course is not the b all and end all however it does help and promotes self motivation and disapline which are very important. I graduated from a 3 year BA in music theatre performance from the university of Ballarat (aka formally known as BAPA now renamed Arts Academy) in Victoria. I can honestly say that they were the best three years of my life. You meet a lot of helpful contacts through such courses, however they are quite difficult to get into. They like to accept people who are a little older and more mature with a bit of life experience however there are acceptions. You really have to do a very strong audition, resume means nothing unless you can prove your words in action. If it's what she really wants to do and there's nothing she'd rather opt for I say go for it give it your all and never give up.

best of luck.
