What a Superstar!!!
Fri, 12 Apr 2002, 08:45 amCongratulations to Alex McLennan & PlayLovers for a job well done with Jesus Christ Superstar. The costumes were great, the singing, the music, though it was a bit loud at times and drowned out the singers occasionally (musicians always want to play it LOUD, don't they).
While Judas (Sam Rabbone) was my wife's favourite, I thought that Chris Kabay stole the show as Herod. I especially loved the sparkly suit and shoes.
But, of course, JCS isn't complete without Jesus (a very talented Paul Whiteley - what a voice), Mary (the lovely Gillian Binks), Caiaphas (James Clayton - lovely deep voice), Annas (an evil looking Stuart Liang), Pontius Pilate (Jason Seperic - very SS looking), Peter (Andrew Baker - I was expecting to hear a cock crow after the 3rd denial), Simon (Thomas Wood) and all the rest - there's just too many to list them all. They all did such a great job.
My only other criticism; if you are going to mike up the principles, maybe the others should be as well when singing solo (even if briefly) as we couldn't hear their voices - even from the second row. And what a pity that the mike kept cutting out on Judas' last song. Sam did a great job in continuing to sing and didn't let it distract him. I hope that the sound tech survived after the show!
But other than that I can highly recommend going to see a great, entertaining, very professional show.I was looking forward to seeing JCS and I was not disappointed. WELL DONE PLAYLOVERS!!!
