Pete n Keely -Australian Premiere
Thu, 6 June 2013, 01:20 pmPete 'n' Keely
by James Hindman - with original Music by Patrick Brady and lyrics by Mark Waldrop
This hilarious musical tells the story of Pete Bartel and Keely Stevens, one of America's most loved singing/performing couples of the 50s. Their legendary breakup at Caesar's Palace over Pete's philandering led to less successful solo careers. But now it's 1968, and Pete and Keely are "back together" to revive their careers in a live television special. Of course, singing together will require that they also speak to one another again. As they relive their history together through song, what transpires is a wild series of events both in front of the live audience and off-camera. Will love conquer all? Or will it be Caesar’s Palace all over again?
Pete ‘n’ Keely was first performed in New York in 2000, and was nominated for best Off-Broadway Musical and for two drama Desk Awards. The Australian Premiere of the show will be performed in June at Paul Peacock’s Underground Cabaret at the Kings Perth Hotel.
Lindsay McNab and Alan O’Neill, both veterans of the Perth theatre scene, star as the singing duo.
The production team also play an integral part in the story. Paul Peacock operating sound adds further humour as Marty, the studio announcer, whose svelte tones can’t really hide the panic in his voice when the special threatens to self-destruct. Music director Tim How is at the piano as the broadcast’s bandleader, Del DaCosta, and must cope with the unprofessional antics of the two stars. Shelly Ormerod operates the lighting and as Stage Manager, keeps the action, props and audience participation in check. Choreography by Manuao TeAotonga adds that extra 1960’s class and “cheese factor”.
So tune in as America’s Swingin’ Sweethearts reunite for their live television reunion special, and back on the rollercoaster that got them where they are today…divorced!
