AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions will be on Sunday, 24th March 2013 at Koorliny Arts Centre. All auditionees are required to make an audition booking by contacting the director, Ian Cross, via email (ianlivesinoz@gmail.com). Please put ‘Joseph Auditions’ in the subject field.
The audition will consist of a group movement audition at the start of each session and individual auditions immediately after. Audition sessions/groups will be held at the following times:
Children’s Chorus: 9.00am
Session 1: 10.00am
Session 2: 12.00pm
Session 3: 2.00pm
Narrators/Jacob: 4.00pm
You will need to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of your session to fill in forms and have your photo taken.
Acting Audition
• Audition scripts will be available on the day. There is no need to prepare anything prior to the audition.
• We will provide a partner to work with where necessary.
Singing Audition
• All auditionees must audition with the songs specified below. Please do not come to your audition with any song other that what has been specified.
• Songs must be sung in the correct key; the MD will accompany you for your audition. Please do not sing a capella, or request that the song be transposed.
• As the show is sung through, you will need to perform your chosen song.
Dancing/Movement Audition
• Please wear clothes and footwear suitable for moving.
• Everybody’s movement ability will be tested, as most roles in the show require movement.
Notes & Tips for Auditionees
• Acting and singing auditions will be held together; dancing auditions will be held separately as a group at the start of each audition session.
• Dress appropriately in something that you can move, sing and act in.
• Do not be afraid to seek clarification of any instruction that you do not understand.
• Be punctual and if you are running late, kindly contact Jon Lambert on 9467 7118.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
NARRATOR
A woman not of the time or place of the action. The Narrator tells the story through word and song, guiding the audience through the story of Joseph and his brothers, usually gives meaning to the story with her words.
Audition Song: ‘Pharaoh’s Story’
JACOB/POTIPHAR
The father of twelve sons, his favorite being Joseph. At times he may appear unfair and shallow, but he is, more importantly, the prophet who recognizes the future and the calling of Joseph, thus saving the House of Israel. A powerful and rich Egyptian, Potiphar purchases Joseph and puts him to work in his household, where he soon realizes that Joseph is honest, hard-working, and a great addition to his pool of help. When he grows suspicious of his wife and Joseph, however, he grows angry and has Joseph thrown into prison. Age 40-60
Audition Song: ‘Those Canaan Days’
JOSEPH
His father’s favorite, Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over the other eleven. However, it saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. In the end he has risen to a great position of power, but he still forgives his brothers and brings his family to Egypt to partake of the bounty he has accumulated there. Age 20-30.
Audition Song: ‘Close Every Door’
JOSEPH'S ELEVEN BROTHERS (DOUBLED AS EGYPTIANS)
Although acting usually as a group, they each have their own different personalities, talents, and flaws. As a group, they sell Joseph into slavery, but as individuals they deal with the following years and how they can make amends. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places.
REUBEN: Age can be up to 50.
Audition Song: ‘One More Angel’ – American Accent required.
SIMEON: Age can be up to 50.
Audition Song: ‘Those Canaan Days’ – French Accent required.
LEVI/PHARAOH: The most powerful man in Egypt, Pharaoh is considered a god on earth. When Joseph interprets his dreams, he promotes him to one of the highest positions in his government. In most productions, Pharaoh is portrayed as an Elvis Presley-style figure. Age 18 – 40.
Audition Song: ‘Song of The King’
JUDAH: Age can be up to 50
Audition Song: ‘Benjamin Calypso’ – Reggae style required.
DAN, NAPHTALI, ASHER, ISSACHAR, ZEBULUN, BENJAMIN
Ages 18 – 40
Audition Song: Any of the above songs for Reuben, Simeon, Levi or Judah.
THE BROTHERS WIVES:
Audition Song: ‘Pharaoh’s Story’
CHILDREN'S CHORUS: Fill a variety of roles in the show.
Audition Song: 'Any Dream Will Do’
The roles of Mrs Potiphar, Butler and Baker will be cast from the wives and brothers. The brothers and wives will double in a number of roles throughout the show.
