Tertiary education in musical theatre
Tue, 11 Oct 2011, 05:41 pmHi everyone! As a musical theatre dork currently in highschool and contemplating the future, I thought it would be nice to have a forum for those in a similar situation to discuss what tertiary options are available in the field of music theatre, compile some sort of comprehensive list of degrees and vocational qualifications, and maybe have a bit of a talk about things like audition requirements too.
This afternoon a friend and I started compiling a list of all the music-theatre specific bachelor degrees in the country. Here's what we have so far!
Ballarat Arts Academy, VIC - http://guerin.ballarat.edu.au/ard/artsacademy/perf_arts_prospective/voice/index.shtml
National Institute of Dramatic Art, NSW - http://www.nida.edu.au/default.aspx?ArticleID=1688
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, WA - http://www.waapa.ecu.edu.au/courses-and-admissions/our-courses/disciplines/music-theatre
Central Queensland University, QLD - http://musicandtheatre.cqu.edu.au/FCWViewer/view.do?page=7837
Victorian College of the Arts, VIC - http://www.vca.unimelb.edu.au/bfamusictheatre
Australian Institute of Music, NSW - http://www.aim.edu.au/courses/music-theatre/undergraduate/bachelor-of-music.asp
There are probably more. Here's a couple vocational courses we came across.
APO Arts Academy, VIC - http://www.apoartsacademy.com/MusicTheatre/
Australian Institute of Music, NSW - http://www.aim.edu.au/courses/music-theatre/undergraduate/diploma-of-music.asp
Showfit, VIC - http://www.showfit.com.au/
Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, WA - http://www.waapa.ecu.edu.au/courses-and-admissions/our-courses/disciplines/music-theatre
Principal Academy of Dance and Performing Arts, WA - http://www.padance.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=73
Hopefully if we all pitch in this can turn into a handy resource for any Broadway babies out there who want to train in MT once they finish school. :D

Thanks
Hi Ephie,
Thanks for what seems to be a comprehensive list. I just heard back from my VCA callback that I won't be offered a place in 2012. I have already finished a year of an Arts degree, so it's certainly no great loss - I'll just continue with what I was doing. I am fairly certain that my lack of dance experience let me down, so it's something I should work on.
I think that, post-graduation, I should aim to move to the US to take on some world-class theatrical study (I hear that Australian drama schools are considered to be fairly worthless in the US theatre scene). However, does anyone have any information on the Ballarat course? I have a friend who did a drama degree there, and enjoyed it greatly, so I'm wondering what the quality/reputation of the Ballarat musical theatre course is like. Has it created any notable graduates?
Does anyone know of a drama/musical theatre course directory for the US? I've found a few lists of the top schools in the past, but a fairly comprehensive list would be great.
Good luck with high school and university, Ephie!
Cheers,
Will

Brent St/foundation VCA?
Hi,
I was wondering if you'd heard about Brent St, or the foundation course at VCA for Musical Theatre and their reputations for vocational courses? And if so, which one would be better? Mainly for the purpose of improving for aceptance into the bachelor courses with the higher reputations.
