I want to put to rest the rumor that John Senczuk has cast himself as the lead and his choreographer in a principal role in Blood Brothers. This is categorically wrong. I have no idea where the rumor that some crazy director as cast themselves and their choreographer to play inappropriate roles came from.

I hadn't heard the

I hadn't heard the rumour. Is there a cast list for BB? Apart from Amanda Muggleton? www.meltheco.org.au

That's good to hear

Well that's good to hear. I don't think the production team of a particular show should be able to cast themselves as principal roles. It rather makes the audition process a bit of a farce. How can you justify giving the role to the same person who took part in judging all the others going for the same role? People spend time & effort preparing for auditions, and to find out that there was no real opportunity for them to obtain that role is frustrating and unprofessional. If a role is pre-cast then people should be made aware of that from the start so as not to get their hopes up, and to give them the opportunity to audition for another role, or another show entirely if the role they are looking to play is no longer up for grabs.

Is it possible that ...

... someone is using the age old technique of denying a rumour in order to start one? Just asking! Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au www.moorebooks.net.au

The rumor appears to have

The rumor appears to have nothing to do with John Senczuk. The ITA should be out there telling directors that if they want to run auditions where the outcome is all but a done deal then there will be consequences. In this case it would be a very short conversation.

Reality

The ITA is not a governing or enforcing body like a union or organizational representative. They cannot enforce any theatre to adhear to any regulation or ruling. Even if they were, they have no influence what-so-ever over professional productions such as Blood Brothers. Directors and companies can run auditions however they choose, although they run the serious risk of loosing popularity, face or whatever, if they make the conscious choice to pre-cast without notice.

Calling on the ITA to do anything is a fruitless exercise. It's not what they are there for.

So what are they there

So what are they there for? Oh... promote mediocrity.

What has the ITA ever done for us?

What the ITA do do.

The ITA do run the Finlay awards as a way of encouraging community theatre in WA. If directors are going to treat community theatre productions (it's quite clear that this has nothing to do with IAJ or John Senczuk) as a self indulgence then they should be asking if this is what they want to be encouraging. However, it has become known that said self-casting is only if the director can’t find a suitable actor to fill the role. Obviously, there has been an extensive search. Perhaps the ITA could help said director to find a suitable actor? Apparently there is this web site where directors can post calls for actors. Anyone heard of it? And congratulations to Paul Treasure, for being the first person to recognise this whole discussion for the farce that it is. Well done!
