WA Premiere of Maury Yeston's "Nine"
Thu, 15 Oct 2009, 05:07 pmRoleystone Theatre's end of year season for 2010 is Maury Yeston's "Nine" which we believe will be the WA Premiere.
So before we start making fools of ourselves and using the "P" word in any advertising...
Does anyone else know of it EVER being done in WA before?!

This may be a silly
This may be a silly question, but why produce a musical so close to the release of the film?
Walter PlingeFri, 16 Oct 2009, 02:18 am
Because that ensures high
Because that ensures high ticket sales and general interest in the musical. And if the movie is anything like all of the recent film to musical adaptions, everyone will won't to here half of the songs the movie skipped.
A puppy died the day they decided not to reschedule and film the ballad of sweeney todd.
And I'm not aware of any productions of nine ever in Perth but i can't say that with 100% conviction.
Walter PlingeFri, 16 Oct 2009, 02:19 am
and clearly i made a typo
and clearly i made a typo and meant to say "not film the ballad of sweeney todd"

I'm sure the fact that it
I'm sure the fact that it is soon to released as a film would provide an inquisitive audience who will already be fed the hype etc, therefore, in terms of publicity and interest its already done for you

Why so close to film?
MARKETING MARKETING MARKETING MARKETING MARKETING!!!!!
I've been wanting to do this show for about fifteen years but have been hampered by the fact that no one else in Perth knows it.
Next year that will all change, and damn it, I'm the one with the long love affair, I'm getting in first!
:-)
On the other side, did you know that the producers of the film of Dreamgirls paid the performance rights for all amateur production of the show produced in the US in the twelve months prior tpo the film's release?
Why?
Marketing!

Well, I know a film release won't hamper me if I had been waiting to do it that long. Best of luck! You will definitely get bums on seats. Though, I pity the poor person who is cast in the same role Daniel Day Lewis.

Film of Nine
Film release - HAMPER?!
I actually went down on my knees and gave thanks to the gods when they announced the film :-)
At least you can be assured I won't just be copying the film, a lot of the production style is already set...

Playhouse?
Hi Paul,
I don't know why, but I have a feeling I've seen a pic somewhere of a production of Nine, performed in the 1980s, at the Playhouse.
It may be worth asking someone like Edgar Metcalfe, or John Milson who would probably know. Or even Ivan King, who maintains the perf arts museum at the Maj (I believe?).
Good luck,
Jason

Re Nine
Nine Premiered in Sydney in the very late 80's (1987)produced by Colin Devine. I attended the premiere as I was performing in another Pro production in Sydney at the time It would not have been available for amateur release. There is an Australian Cast recording (Produced by Colin Devine and John Diedrich)which truly leaves other international cast recordings in its wake. I played Guido in the first Australian non-pro production produced by Cantebury Theatre Guild at the Orion Theatre in 1992 (Dir: Colin Peet, Musical Direction, Don Haddon, Choreographer, Cathy Sargent).
regards,
Chris

Nine Over East
Chris, if you are CERTAIN Canterbury Theatre Guild was the non-pro Oz Premiere then I think we can safely assume next year will (finally) be the WA premiere.
I used to have a copy of the Sydney Cast of Nine on Tape, and I agree it is by far the best recording of this fantastic show.
Thanks

Hi Chris .... Memories,
Hi Chris .... Memories, memories ... a great show!! Is it that long ago??

Yes I had the pleasure of directing Nine for Canterbury. This was the first time that the show was done with a full male and female cast. Soon after i worked with Tommy Tune who told the Author and composer of our vesion. they contacted me and have some images from our show. I saw Nine recently at Sutherland with one male and a bunch of women. Iprefer the bigger version as the bottom line gets some balls and the bigger cast sell more TX. Good luck
