Really, if your absolutely

Really, if your absolutely bonkers for the show then just give the dancers enough time to rehearse and you'll be fine! Rollerskating itself isn't the hard part, it'll be getting them in time so i'd definetly try and get a good strong dance chorus so at least it's the balancing they'll be worried about rather than the timing and movement!!!

getting people to roller

getting people to roller skate won't be hard?? You do realise in the professional productions the cast have to do 2 weeks fulltime of skate school - everyone is on skates the entire show - not something to be looked at lightly, also any company looking at putting the show on would want to have good insurance coverage for injuries. Also what theatre would you use in Perth??
Walter PlingeSat, 4 Oct 2008, 05:22 pm

fellow walter, i can

fellow walter, i can garuntee you that the producers of this production will not have thought of the ramifications for having a cast of teenagers and geriatrics on rollerskates, but come on - if this does not sell out then perth has no sense of humour, because, this is going to be incredible!!! 'starlight express' just seems to be one of those productions that should have been removed from the list of productions allowed to be produced by community theatre (purely for the sake of dignity). i think (seriously) that it shows a real lack of originality or even daring by companies in perth to choose productions that simply are not suitable. im sure people do realise that there is a catalogue of performances that go beyond andrew lloyd webber and oscar hammnstein, but, perth you do have to look for them! grow up guys this simply will not work!!!!!!!! having said that i want to reserve my ticket now!!!

Pay

No I'd just pay to watch footage of their rehearsals. Would be fun! Good luck. You've created enough attack already and you're only gathering interest. ~ Tari The Writer is a child forever listening at the keyhole of the adult world.

Control, Control!

Seriously, make the rehearsal period twice as long as normal, and announce auditions WELL in advance so people can clear their schedules and I think you'd be surprised who turned up to audition! Go for it, this is a show that has NEVER been done in Perth... Don't let the Walters get you down :-)

Skating is the easy part

As a skater of several years, learning to skate can takes just one day, becoming proficient/graceful can take a while after that but a week or two should be enough. The tricky part is finding roller-skates, most places sell roller-blades and hire skates are awful at best. You'd need a couple of people trained in first aid but it's pretty difficult to get badly injured on rollerskates (just make sure everyone knows how to brake!). Heck, this would be so much fun to do, even with the risks it's well worth having a crack at.
