Disclosure: I have no financial or personal ties to either Luna Cinemas or The Metropolitan Opera. I know I may seem to be nagging a bit, but having now seen two of these broadcasts, I am hooked! Australia Day Weekend is the third of this seasons Met Broadcasts. 11:30am Saturday 26th, 1:00pm Sunday 27th January. Here in Perth playing at both Lunas, but many other cinemas around the country... This weekend's broadcast is Giuseppe Verdi's Mac.... Personally I am really looking forward to it as it is the only one of the Verdi Shakespeares that I don't know (I'm much more familiar with his Otello and Falstaff) Seriously, this series is a chance to see some of the greatest pieces of music theatre (opera is after all just musical theatre on cocaine) as performed by one of if not the greatest production houses in THE WORLD!!! And it's a damned side cheaper than flying to New York... If you take your music theatre seriously, then you really should take in some (if not all) of these broadcasts. If you are not familiar with opera here is my personal guide: If you like Andrew Lloyd Webber then La Boheme is the one to see. If you prefer Schoenberg/Boublil then you can't go past this week's Macca. If you are a Sondheim fan then the best one might actually be Peter Grimes. If you prefer a musical full of show tunes like a Jerry Herman show then maybe you might like La Fille du Regiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) Manon Lescaut is my least favourite of the series and I'm only going because I'm an anally retentive completionist. And even though Tristan und Isolde is arguably the best opera on the list, if you are a newby to the art form - DON'T GO TO THIS ONE!!! It's like introducing someone to cricket by making them sit through a test match! Kristen and I are going to the Sunday arvo Freo screening, so we may see you there :-)
