Seti against a backdrop of civic unrest, at the heart of this story is a gentle messiah whose message of peace and tolerance is lost amidst voices clamoring for a warrior king to lead his people out from under the iron fist of the Romans. As observers on all sides grow increasingly wary of a possible insurrection, the seeds of doubt and betrayal are sown. Webber and Rice’s stunning musical score offers an unflinching, moving, and provocative examination of the role of human nature in the ensuing turn of events.
