The Rink - get your skates on
Thu, 29 Nov 2012, 04:43 pmAnd my absolute favourite theatrical production in Perth at the moment is a great musical by Playlovers in Floreat. It is called "The Rink" and it is a story which is set in an American skating rink. It is about the lives of a mother and her young daughter against the backdrop of the rink. The young girl skates as her parents move between a loving and a conflicting relationship. We are taken back to the earlier glory days of the rink as well as now witnessing it sadly waiting for its demolition.
The songs by Ebb and Kander are not very well known but should be. The diction and voices of the two female leads, Sue Flood as the mother Anna and Mirella Renal as the daughter Angel, were perfect. A live orchestra enhanced the show. The younger Angel was played by two young actors who were sharing alternate performance nights. The set, a delapidated skating rink, was just amazing. Good support was provided by the male actors who played a variety of interesting characters including demolition workmen.
David Young looks and sounds believable in his role as Anna's father-in-law. This production of The Rink was a real triumph for director Alida Chaney. She fought hard for the rights to bring this particular version of the musical to Perth giving audiences a rare opportunity to see it. Go, get your skates on and see it!
