The 39 Steps - Busselton's Bare Naked Theatre
Sat, 5 May 2012, 10:03 pmHi Gordon.
Just wanted to say it's a shame you didn't get to catch the version of 'The 39 Steps' put on by Bare Naked Theatre in Busselton. We've just done several weeks of touring throughout the South West, but unfortunately not in Perth. Response has been unanimously outstanding...for instance people have been travelling from Manjimup to Bridgetown, or Dunsborough to Busselton, in order to see it again the following week!
The season at their home theatre (the 130 seat Weld Theatre in Busselton) sold out all shows before we even began, and we extended for an extra night last night. That sold out too, and we are now planning a FINAL final show next Saturday night.
I've been having an absolute ball acting in this production! It's slick, fast paced (only 115 min) and a joy to perform in, even while labouring sometimes under 3 layers of costume at once! (No, we have no dressers, or any backstage crew; just the four cast members to create all the effects and change the sets).
Russell Chandler plays Hannay, Emily Brown plays Annabella, Margaret, Pamela, and a few walk-ons, and Kylie Bywaters and I play everyone else. (29 characters between us, not hundreds as is oft claimed). Michael Taylor directed and operates the soundscape I created (606 sound and music effects triggered by 130 cues - he's busy!), and Terry Thompson operating LX.
I find it hard to conceive how the Patrick Barlow script can work very well with a larger cast...surely the point is to be struggling to portray the film with an undersized ensemble?...but not having seen the other shows, I'll take your word for it.
Anyway, this isn't a review, and we don't need to promote our show as it's already been a success... I just wanted to acknowledge Bare Naked Theatre and thank them for inviting me down to contribute to such a great show.
Cheers,
Craig
You can't blame him really.

You can't blame him really. There were three versions in as many weeks and it's difficult being enthusiastic about a production a third time round.
