‘Occupied’ is a fresh contemporary dance sequence, directed and choreographed by Ashleigh Berry (World First); it has been in development since 2010. It is showing in The Blue Room Theatre, 53 James Street, Northbridge until Saturday 4th February. The 40-minute performance starts at 9.00 pm.

It is Friday night and five gorgeous girls (Bec Taylor, Mikaila Roe, Zeffie Maynard, Nicole Ward, Jessie Hoeschle and Gabrielle van der Elst) with their dresses so short that next week’s washing is showing, are checked by the bouncer before heading into the powder room of the nightclub.

Award winning DJ MassivTrav (Travis Collins) turns the volume up on the techno house music and the place comes alive.

The girls look into the mirror, pass around the lippy, and straighten each other seams. Now the five beautiful friends step out to find the man of their dreams.

As the night goes on, we witness the nightmare of the ladies toilets, the shameless patrons, the increase in the drinks consumption and how in desperation - at not finding a fella - the bitchiness starts and the degradation begins.

Created in conjunction with the performers, this highly energetic dancing follows the mood perfectly. Even as the girls collapse in a drunken stupor, they do it in unison and still in time to the superbly appropriate music. There is a great deal of humour – even dressing them in the Wiggles colours. Toilet paper seems to be everywhere. Throughout the audience cringed, then rocked with laughter.

The Aussie dancers are from different States, and all are top of their class in contemporary dance.

A very clever, well observed, fresh dance routine, a joy to watch.
