Good Evening
Thu, 2 Dec 2010, 09:50 am‘Good Evening’ is a collection of short sketches written about 50 years ago by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. They have now been edited and ‘localised’ by Shaun Micallef. This presentation, directed by Tom Healey, is showing at His Majesty’s Theatre in Perth. The 90-minutes shows start each evening at 7.30 pm, and run until Saturday 4th December.
A major worry about seeing classic humour, which still lives on with great affection today, is that the actors will ruin a treasured memory. However Micallef and Curry haven’t tried to mimic or impersonate Cook and Moore, they just delivered the sketches in their own – yet very similar – style. This worked beautifully; these contemporary comedians mirrored the natural dry humour of the original pair. With Micallef’s famous facial expressions and glances to the audience, coupled with the absurdity of the situations, the hilarity flowed. Stephen Curry surprised many of his fans with his fantastic singing voice. Gone is the thick kid from ‘The Castle’, here we have a first rate comedian.
Wonderful teamwork.
Often comedians simply have a roll-up backcloth for their set design, here set and costume designer Adam Gardnir gave the full ‘star’s’ plush staircase, beautifully lit by lighting designer Niklas Pajanti. Buried in the set was a grand piano played by Bill Bailey look-alike, musical director and accompanist, Mark Jones. Mark, who is a prize winning actor, also sang along with the comedians doing a very good impersonation of Dud.
A hilarious night for the packed theatre, naturally ending with ‘Good bye’; again not copied but still full of humour.
