When the Rain Stops Falling By Andrew Bovell Directed by Chris Drummond Presented by Queensland Theatre Company & Brink Productions Playhouse, QPAC, Brisbane I knew When the Rain Stops Falling was going to be complex when I noticed there was a chronology and family tree provided inside the program. But once the penny dropped about halfway through the show, it became so powerful it gave me chills. Spanning 80 years, the story jumps in time between 1959 and 2039. Locations switch between London, The Coorong, Adelaide and Alice Springs. It was a lot to keep up with, and when several character changes were thrown into the mix it was no surprise it took me a while to twig to who was who. Nevertheless, none of my confusion affected the intensity that built as the plot slowly developed throughout the two hours without interval. And what a smart move it was to have no intermission – the tension would have been abruptly broken. I don’t dare try and recap the plot in full – this drama slash tragedy contains way too much for that. But fundamentally it follows the lives of four generations who are connected by love and sorrow... By Kellie Scott. To read the full review, please visit http://www.brisbanecritiques.com
