HAIRSPRAY
Thu, 7 Oct 2010, 09:16 pmSo last Saturday off I trot to see the opening of Hairspray in Melbourne.
The opening was put back to 8.00pm due to the replay of some or other football match which Collingwood duly won.
I missed the stage show on broadway when i was there a few years ago, I didn't really enjoy the film version, although my wife and I love John Travolta so I wasn't sure what to expect.
I urge you to take your seats about 5 - 10 mins before curtain up. One is subject to the
most hilarious parodies of adverts from the 50's and 60's, a time when women knew their place and the nuclear bomb was revered.
Lets start with the set. OMG, amazing, brilliant, fantastic, neon, did I say brilliant?. It
assaulted your senses with its very brightness and brilliance.
Lets move on to the choreography. Jason Coleman is not my favourite person in the world but he has done the most amazing job here and quite rightly accepts his place as a doyen of choreographic and dance knowledge.
The style is brilliant, and topical, the moves very sustainable for 8 shows a week ( big up to the girl who threw in 2 biranis in heels ( darling I cant stutter down Oxford St on a sat evening so this young thing doing acro in heels, my cap is lifted)).
The Direction: Whoever said David Atkins couldn't direct traffic needs to totally re-think that statement, the actors were subtle, the action fast paced and the comic timing of the scenes very very good, 10 out of 10 for direction Mr Atkins, excellent job.
That boy who won SYTYCD 1st season Jack Chambers you are brilliant, what a great voice, what good acting skills what a triple threat you are, again David Atkins must be applauded here for his handling of Jack.
OK the rest of the cast are strong, the energy amazing, the commitment brilliant, I have no hesitation in telling you GO AND SEE THIS MUSICAL IT IS BRILLIANT.
Finally, Trevor Ashley, Camper than a row of tents, larger than life, as I said John Travolta is 1 of my favourites, Ashley love, in my opinion I can give you no greater accolade than I enjoyed you more than the qantas pilot. he is funny, sad, cutting he is quite brilliant.
I would love to say something bitchy and witty about irreverence etc, I can't, I loved it.
Congratulations and in the words of Judge Jason on SYTYCD love it, love it, love it.
