‘The Pride’ is a world premiere play from Side Pony Productions. It has been directed and produced by Zoë Pepper who has had several memorable productions in the past. This inspired story and production was co-created by the cast and director. The performances run until Saturday 18th September at the Blue Room Theatre, 53 James Street, Northbridge. All shows are at 7.00 pm.

In the Lyon house arrogant Bruce (Brendan Ewing) rules supreme, his cuddly lioness wife Linda (Adriane Daff) adores him. With visitors due, Linda decides that the house needs to be modernised and freshened up. Bruce acquires a couple of electrical fittings that he thinks will be invaluable in the smooth running of the house. Before long, Linda advises Bruce that the house will soon be full of pride!
Bruce starts decorating the kitchen with a Henri Rousseau theme. When the young lion from next door, gorgeous James (Russell Leonard) pops around to help, the work should be done in no time at all.
Bruce exerts his dominance, but is he really the tough leader that he thinks he is?

This very well directed 70 minute very black comedy, takes the audience on a rollercoaster of emotions, as it blends the frailties of human life with that of an African savannah pride of lions. Whether human or animal, life can be bitch. This fresh and original storyline has several areas of laugh-out-loud humour coupled with genuine pathos. The play, written with great insight, flows smoothly and shows how circumstances can change a family structure.

By being tackled in such a light-hearted way, at times almost dreamlike, helps to emphasise the depth of feelings and lack of true ethics in life. Director, Zoë Pepper, has integrated dance, song and hilarious props. The wonderful lions’ costumes by Esther Sandler are stunning and charming.

Lucy Birkinshaw’s lighting design is quite complex for such a simple show, but the effort shows.

A very funny show that is well conceived and produced.

oops

Sorry but I missed out this paragraph from the article above.

Brendan and Adriane’s comedic delivery was hilarious, and James’s dance routine with moonwalking brought a spontaneous applause. Very strong cast with lots of fun expressions and movement.
