Chess
Sat, 19 June 2010, 09:25 amFull marks to Limelight (and director Christopher Churchouse; Musical Director: Kate McIntosh) for yet another excellent show. I saw Chess for the first time last night Friday 19th. Unlike many musicals the audience were strangely quiet and still, presumably whilst they listened intently to follow the story. Everything was so well organised and neat, facial expressions and dance routines were excellent, I loved the sombre expressions from the Russians. The costumes (haven't I seen those red jackets before in Conduct Unbecoming)were good and I loved the contrast between the Americans and the Russians.
Full marks to Freddie, he was cocky, smooth and played his part well; Anatoly, well I always expect a good performance from Ryan and tonight he was on form (Ryan, you just get better and better); Florence, a beautiful voice and we really believed you were having an affair with Anatoly;Ivan was obviously Russian(!) and blessed with a magnificent voice; Arbiter played his usual efficent highly believable character (whatever part you play mate, you just do it so well); Walter, the moustache, the suit, the demenour, just so believable; Svetlana, a beautiful voice and the duet with Florence at the end gave my wife goosebumps...... The chorus all professionals (your interaction was so very believable), loved Emma the reporter and Gemma how many times did you change your hairstyle? The musicians were excellent, so many keyboards. Now Danni that outfit in the Bangkok scene, I'm sure that lots of people are going to talk to you about that, well done all of you and thank you.
