As Gordon's review stipulates, The Boys’ was written by Perth playwright, Gordon Graham, at the age of 42. This is significant because he is clearly writing about boys, despite being middle aged, meaning he must be a very good writer. A quick google search reveals that Gordon is also an American journalist and research consultant. A very talented man indeed. Gordon (the Optom) said that the boys is autobiographical, which worries me deeply as this play is based on the Anita Cobby case. Do not look this up, especially if you are eating any meat-based products. I think Gordon (the playwright) has a lot to answer for. I might just call the DPP now. The play won an Australian Writers' Guild award in 1992, which means he must have paid his fees for that year and that there were no spelling errors in the copy submitted for adjudication. It is presented by the Old Mill Theatre, Mends Street, South Perth playing nightly at 8pm, until 20th February, with a 2.00 pm matinee. So, what did I think about my night out to the theatre? Well firstly, I went to the Irish Club for pie and pint night (only $15), which I thought was extremely good value. Then I went and had a hot fudge sundae. After buying my tickets, I sipped on a bottle of little creatures that was somewhat lukewarm. Overall, a very mixed start to the evening. Now, I must give a disclaimer. I don't watch plays like everyone else watches plays and therefore my review may be somewhat different. As someone who trained with Lee Strasberg in the early 50s, it is both a blessing and a curse to watch other productions. What I wouldn't give to have been trained by Hayman theatre, like the rest of Perth's poor, unfortunate mob. Any negative comments I make relate directly to the performance of the night from an actor's perspective. I don't want to offend any of the actors. So, what are my thoughts about this play? Well, far be it for me to judge, but I am pretty sure I have seen a lot of the props in previous Old Mill productions. Was that table set used in Street Car? I know that the outdoor set was exactly the same one from the Sum of Us. I half expected the brothers to start making out - NOW THAT IS A PLAY PEOPLE! Also, why did the director insist on using that annoying music from her production of Trainspotting so frequently? It was like "here's a dramatic moment, whack on that crappy track". Cutting straight to the point, whilst being brutually honest ... a hard thing to do ... I think the acting and the show was alright. However, Julian Hern's perm really stole the show. Congratulations Julia. I couldn't stop looking at it.

Permanent Perm

So does that mean that the best thing about the show was hair design - or the perm?

Well Alvy, may I start by

Well Alvy, may I start by saying being 'trained'by Strasberg (or Stanislavski's mother as he sometimes refered) must be a curse, a blessed curse. As one who was prepared by and battered by the late great, Margret Rutherford, I feel your pain and smell your musk. The Boys is, as I'm sure you know, an amateur dramatic performance...in this instance, I'm sure one can forgive the reproduction of props and sets of performances past. Was it Grotowski who endorsed Poor Theatre, or did he mean something entirely different, I don't know, I was trained at the Hayman or was that Hay Man? So sorry, drifted a little...Alvy to cut short, seriously, appaling review completely pointless, I know it and you know it. Very silly, very, very silly (string).

Only one person bought

Only one person bought Little Creatures last night, so thanks for the crit, Daniel.

Sea Biscuit, if you took my

Sea Biscuit, if you took my 'review' seriously, I feel deeply sorry for you. If you read the previous review of this show, it is very obvious that I am lampooning the reviewers and not the show itself. I decided to do this after I heard one of the cast members told me their confidence was battered after criticism in that review thread. The object of my piece was to emphasis that people should not take reviews on this website too seriously. The cast and crew of The Boys are expressing themselves artistically and having fun doing it, so why should they be so concerned by what other people think? Especially those who think they can pass judgement just because they were apparently 'trained' at some point in their lives. The audience seem to be enjoying it, so who cares? Robert, my identity is not a secret. In fact, the director and one of the cast already know I wrote this. 'Exposing' me doesn't make up for the fact the beer was lukewarm.

I think we may be missing a point (possibly)

I think the author (I won't venture an opinion on who that may be [extra large wink]) may have been gently mocking an earlier review and satirising it somewhat - at least I hope so 'cos I got feelings man ;) It may not be in tune with everyone's sense of humour but I think it was done tongue in cheek and was just a bit of fun - nothing more. And whilst I defend the earlier reviewers right to post their opinions, I equally defend anyone's right to take the urine as it were. Read Christian's review again and then Mr Singer's review and draw your own conclusions. Hey, if the play I'm in draws a bit of light-hearted banter and riposte then so be it. Kudos gentlemen. Robert, sheath thy dagger - I know you mean well :) but I think it was just a lark that may have been a smidgeon too opaque for a casual read to see through. And the author is correct - it IS indeed a damn good (fake) perm!!! Last two nights of THE BOYS so get along and see it. As usual, three days out from the season closing I think I'm finally in the groove with the character (scary thought). If not, feel free to post a review stating how crappy I am and take aim at the temperature of Old Mills beer stock. Whilst I'm talking about the production many thanks to Norma, Robert, Phil, Hywel (welsh git), the crew of The Boys and all the other behind the scenes and FOH people associated with the production. Robert, thank you for stepping in and attending the lighting (or was it the sound) as an emergency last night. God bless yas all.
jmuzzFri, 19 Feb 2010, 05:50 pm

Yay

I was right. For once. Yes I know my posting appeared after his - it takes time to compose!!!! Daniel, you're an idiot :) Next lukewarm beer is on me. Nobody's self confidence needs to be battered by ANY review - we're our own harshest self critics surely?
Robert J WhyteFri, 19 Feb 2010, 06:04 pm

Daniel, I know its not

Daniel, I know its not secret! You weren't the only one taking the piss...so to speak...I gather the temperature difference between both amber fluids wasn't much. Maybe next time if I'm on bar, and the beer is warm, you could say something, it would have been cheerfully exchanged. Regardless, it was good to see you anyway. :D Cheers Robert.

Thank you Daniel, Alvy, or

Thank you Daniel, Alvy, or who ever, I appreciate the fact that you feel sorry for me, thats wonderful, maybe we can catch up and get a luke warm beer? If you wish to do so, we should really do so at a public venue because I don't like to meet people off the net in their lair, I did it once and even though it was very sensual and slinky I would not like to repeat it, just in case it becomes habitual. Unfortunately Alvy Daniel I have an addictive personality, my cross to bear/bare/hair, but its all under control and in my pants. So, balls in your court/caught, let me know. I love Little Creatures, my favourite is squirrel. So tiny and twitchy, they love nuts almost as much as I do...oooh, there I go again, Mrs Slocomb would be so proud. Ps you are funny and I like you.
