Tuesday in one act
Fri, 21 Aug 2009, 08:21 am‘Tuesday, In One Act’ written by Demelza Rogers is a Blue Room and Renegade Production (the winners of the 2008 Blue Room Judges’ Award). It is showing at the Blue Room Studio, 53 James Street, Northbridge until 5th September, All shows at the later time of 8.30 pm, plus Sat 2.00 pm matinees
It is Tuesday and on a park bench in the city, feeding the birds, sits Richard (Jeremy Mitchell) dressed as a cowboy. Along comes another man, Andrew (Kit Sparrow) in an astronaut suit, he sits next to him. They have both had an upsetting day, filled with sadness. As their conversation progresses we learn of their aims in life, childhood dreams, along with their successes and failures.
Whilst they are talking the life in the city buildings, and the topics of their conversation, are depicted by miniature paper puppets and shadowgraphs. In the sky is a large paper moon, a symbol of make believe, and from it descends the girl in the moon (Demelza Rogers) like a sylph weaving her magic.
In their brief conversation, the scenario seems to pass through several days and nights, as suggested by the complex but stunning lighting (designer Joe Lui, operator David Micenko). Alexa Taylor’s tender and mystical direction, is full of absurdist charisma. The low level, gentle sound track (Joe Lui) is filled with interesting sounds and music. A superb set, which like the storyline, blends the bizarre with the real.
Renegade is synonymous with quality and this is no exception. The story is ‘deep and meaningful’, which may bore the pants off some people, but if appreciated for its true worth, Demelza’s rich script is a whimsical, clever, multifaceted symbolic piece. An excellent production.
