Swingers
Fri, 7 Aug 2009, 11:04 pmRen (Shannon Mitchell) is bored with the lack of sex drive in his marriage, so he goes on-line visiting various dating sites, purely for ‘research purposes’. When his wife, Isabella (Vanja Clayton), discovers his latest interest, she is at first horrified but then pulls out a few stops of her own to regain Ren’s passion.
Then Ren suggests to Bella that perhaps 'talking' to some of his new friends may assist her overcome her shyness. Contacts like Portia (Skye Sobejko) and Bob (Goran Oznic), who have advanced in their love life more than most others.
Will the fire-fighter (Peter Bruderlin) and his jealous friend (Dave Kinsman) – who is really into ‘speed’ dating – be able to help? Or even the soft serenading approach of Cecil (James Hagan) and his tender wife Marlene (Danuta Stansall) possibly show the couple the way to true love.
The script is cleverly written around the VERY different characters, all beautifully portrayed by many well-known faces, as you have never seen them before. Inventive movement and delivery. Thanks to Igor Sass’s wonderful direction, the play is fast paced, along with plenty of very humorous lines, exciting and hilarious costumes and a cast who really get down and dirty – although not too dirty to repulse or embarrass the audience, just titillate. In educating you as to what your neighbours might be up to, this show will be appreciated by all ages, even your broadminded Granny.
The lighting captured the fun atmosphere, and an amusing sound design mix of music and effects, both produced by Jo Marsh and Aaron Sturk.
Di Day who sadly died earlier this month, was a huge fan of Vanja’s acclaimed work ‘Breathe’, and I am sure that she would have admired this piece for both the writing and humour. Who knows, she was possibly there tonight giggling in the shadows.
Kalamunda is only half an hour from the centre of Perth, and this show is well worth the trip. It was filled with fresh ideas and rollicking good performances by a terrific cast, the theme worked fantastically.
