A reptile dreamed
Thu, 16 Apr 2009, 08:18 am‘A Reptile Dreamed’ from The Wet Weather Ensemble is a Blue Room Studio World first, it runs until 2nd May 2009. All shows 6.30 pm.
A lady in scarlet (Caris Eves – one of Australia’s top models) is preparing for a party, when the first guest (St John Cowcher) arrives early. In prose, poetry and song they discuss the importance of good preparation for success. The food is carefully considered, and includes an ‘I’ll have what she is having’ moment!
We switch from the human form to an insect (Cindy Whalley) emerging from a chrysalis. The actors take us through a variety of beautiful and repulsive, insects and bugs. The superb movement and characterisation of the creepy crawlies, especially the earwigs which at times, would even make a lepidopterist or entomologist cringe.
We see all stages of the insects’ life and death, from cocoon to a brief and comical love making.Delicately and beautifully lit by Karen Cook, the mystery of the story is emphasised. There is a very clever piece of lighting when one of the characters looks into a mirror at the very end of the story.
Wonderful performances from the cast, with clear diction of this tricky script. Excellent directing by Ian Sinclair and dramaturgy Meg Norris, who have filled the story with symbolism, and almost caricaturistic visions of the creatures and their relationship with humans.
A fascinating piece of quality theatre, that makes the audience think, but I hope not a little too intellectual to bring in the crowds?
