Broom! Broom!
Sat, 22 Nov 2008, 04:14 pm‘Broom! Broom!’ is a children’s show conceived by Hardey McMurrick and Rebecca Bradley, it is presented at the Subiaco Arts Centre Studio by Flying Heart Productions. The 10 shows finish on Sunday 23rd November.
It is early one morning and Hardy Bristle (Hardey McMurrick), who lives in a blue wheelie bin, awakes to face another day of cleaning up other people’s mess. Very like Mr Bean, he is a lonely, miserable even aggressive person with one friend, his teddy bear. We see him go, in hilarious mime, through a days work. Then that night a red recycling bin is parked next to his. In it lives a beautiful ‘Lady in Red’ (Bec Bradley); she is a caring, nature-loving person who is full of fun. Her life revolves around her love of the sea, and her poorly house-trained, pet - a floor duster!!
Will the two wheelie inhabitants ever become real friends?
Often, if children’s presenters are condescending, the young audience will spot it and cause chaos. Here the two actors were well tuned in with the kids, mainly aged 4 to 8 yrs, and for the whole 60 minutes had them giggling and enthralled. Under the direction of Sanjiva Margio and Karen Hethey, the mime was intelligent, and with the use of the wheelies most inventive. A tremendous amount of lateral thinking has gone into this show – can you make bins self-propel in a race with each other? A slick presentation with good mood lighting (Sharon Custers), colourful costumes (Poets of the Machine) made this show effervesce.
The full house was very well deserved.
