‘The Tangled Webs We Weave’ is a Shanghai Lil Production Inc, presented as two one-act plays by Perth writer-actor, Noel O’Neill. The plays are showing at Rechabites’ Hall, nightly at 7.30 until September 6th.

‘Holly and Ivy’. After a few years of living down in London, Holly (Catriona Coe) returns to the family home in Edinburgh to celebrate Christmas. On her arrival, she is informed by her older sister Ivy (Sandra Sando), that her mother had died just a few hours earlier. The siblings take the passing of the mother in very different ways.
‘After All This Time’. Whilst feeding the birds in the local park, Charlie (Noel O’Neill) meets an old girlfriend (Lucy Eyre). The two lonely and introverted souls reminisce about the past, and what could have been.

Although the topics do not look particularly appealing, these plays are beautifully constructed. The dialogue is rich, and the story threads constantly twist to reveal yet another vivid layer.
Valerie Dragojevic has smoothly directed the production, with the actors giving a natural flow and realism. The performances were stunning, congratulations especially to Sandra Sando. Lighting Design by Jo Marsh is simple, but very effective.
WAAPA lecturer, Noel, seems to regularly win the WA Best Play award, and once again, his new play ‘After all this time’ could well be in the running. It is very rarely that I would like to see a show for a second time, but these two plays are outstanding and at a sensible ticket price. Try and see them.

You really should get to see this show

Saw this show last night and thought that it was a wonderful piece of writing and acting. Both pieces were absorbing. Congratulations to all involved. There was a very small audience and the venue leaves a little bit to be desired. I had forgotten how poorly supported Perth theatre can be. I've just returned from a prolonged stay in Ireland where almost every town has a drama group and every performance is well supported. I was secretary of the drama festival in a small country town and this year we ran for nine nights and filled the theatre each night. That's a long way from the handful of people who turned up last night. On a positive note, if writers like Noel O'Neill continue to produce writing of this quality then the future is not so bleak. Again well done to all involved.
