Road Train

‘Road Train’ is the latest production from kompany M, the theatrical side of Taylor’s Art and Coffee House, 152 Great Northern Highway (next to Waldecks). The show starts each evening at 8.00 pm, and runs until 12^th April.

            Some 6-year old boys (Allan Girod, Quintin George and Steve Turner) are playing with their trucks and dreaming of their future, when the big boy Tonka (Luke Hewitt) arrives and spoils their fun. The years go by and twenty five years later they are still truckin’. Then there is the female truckie (Cathy Lally - excellent) as tough as any of the lads, but she has a different future in mind.

This is the hilarious story of their lives and their wives - who merely ‘rest’ at home whilst they are away. We hear, in beautiful harmony, from ‘the Truckettes’, greasy plate singing waitresses along the way.

Kompany M’s theatre is a large hay barn with reasonably comfortable seats – how about displacing each row to make viewing easier? Despite being on the eastern boundary of Perth, 40 kms from the city centre, the 140 capacity was filled (on a Wednesday!) with a most receptive audience of truckies, farmers and their wives. The audience loved the innuendoes and the wonderfully funny script by Hellie Turner, showing their appreciation with lots of belly laughs and spontaneous applause.
Hellie has studied the subject well, brought this 10-year old script up to date, but most importantly found a niche in the market, studied her audience and along with yarn spinner John Taylor, given them what they want. A great cast, who really got into the fun. This will be a perennial that will travel Australia for ever.
