I saw this show on Friday night (sorry for the late review). Having seen a number of plays at The Old Mill over recent times, I arrived, expecting a quality show, and this was duly delivered. A great set, excellent sound and lighting effects and hats off to the talented cast for their most accurate portrayals of the characters. Well done to all,a top show. Johnny Grim

Quite Right

What an amazing show. I won't ruin it for those intending to see the show, but WOW. The set was incredible, with a depth that you didn't need to try and imagine, it was just there. Sound and lighting were commendably executed, with perfect precision. To have three actors on the edge of your seat for almost two hours was an accomplishment in itself, but they did it with such verve and ease that you just wanted to see more. My hats off to the direction which oozed natural, real interaction between the three. A delight to watch and I'll be back if I can get a seat. See this play everyone

Dangerous Obsession

Dangerous Obsession’ by N. J. Crisp is showing at the Old Mill Theatre in South Perth, each night at 8.00 pm until Saturday 12th April.

The stunningly beautiful Sally Driscoll (Zalia Joi) has just returned to the conservatory after a sunbathing session, when a strange Crippen-like man appears at the door. He introduces himself as John Barrett (Mark Blades) a man who shared her and her husband’s table for a meal at a conference four years earlier. The fact that he still remembers what she wore, drank and ate naturally disturbs Sally, who cannot really recall this expressionless, creepy visitor. When Sally’s husband Mark (Peter Clark) returns home, he has faint memories of the meeting, but after a hard days work cannot be bothered with this boring little man. Then Barrett, who is obsessed with love, affection and a strange idea of what his rights and entitlements are, is told to leave the home. The mood changes and the stranger makes an offer.

This must be one of the best thrillers that I have seen in years. Norman Crisp was mainly a BBC TV script writer who in the 60’s and 70’s wrote numerous thrillers and spy stories (Colditz). This is his writing at its best. At the interval you are convinced that you have the whole story ‘sorted out’ but how far from the truth can one be?

Hal Davies has skilfully directed the three extremely talented actors, who managed to keep the tension going for the whole play. The scenery, lighting, sound and technical effects were all well above average. It is 15 years since I have seen Zalia act, although I have seen her sing and perform since, it seems a shame that such a talent hasn’t been employed in all these years.

Some shows are the complete package. This play is exceptional in all aspects.

Agreed - FANTASTIC SHOW

Saw this show last night and agree with all the above - what a Fantastic show! Seeing a show like this reminds us why we are all involved in theatre in the first place - to try and achieve something close to this. As an experienced actor I love to try and pick fault - impossible with this show. I hoping to get my partner along to see it next week; if there are any tickets left? The set was wonderful - as mentioned above - really believed you were in this location. Lighting and sound also worked extremely well and a great choice of music. Technically all worked well and helped create a wonderful show. Would imagine that the stage manager has a very easy job with this show - as least can sit back and enjoy. The characters were all cast extremely well, never doubted who they were or what they were trying to achieve. John (Mark) - fantastic portrayal of this weird man not quite there - so natural; hope you’re not like that normally! Sally (Zalia) - great look (in and out of costume!) and really connected with some of the more intense sections of the show. Mark (Peter) - wonderful portrayal from start to finish; hated him, loved him, hated him, pitied him. Must be exhausting maintaining that emotional level all night - hats off. The cast worked well together and I left thinking who else could have done it? Well cast Mr Director. Well done Hal - you have created wonderful theatre (again). I hope you are proud of what you have achieved - we are still talking about this show now. Old Mill should be thanking their lucky stars - will keep an eye out for future shows - what's next? Overall - as close to perfection as I have seen for along time; certainly in Perth. Enjoy the rest of the season - you deserve great rewards. A very jealous but impressed thespian ......... DW

Devil's Advocate

Okay, I can see where you are all coming from. Gordon in particular always has a soft spot for Curtin graduates! I must say that one thing that annoyed me a bit in this play was the broken glass. It seemed to land behind one armchair, after which the 'villain' apparently repeatedly trod on it, scrunching it further and further into the stage. Was that deliberate? I would also (belatedly because of outages) like to pose the rhetorical question - which one of the three had the 'dangerous obsession' of the title? Well done, all. Ssstinger>>>
