Okay so it was bound to happen a review of RENT. Firstly I know that this post is going to cause contraversy and I'm prepared for the barrage of tweenies who will defend their pop idols to the end. So I will say it now... this is only my opinion and I am entitled to it. I also think that when it comes to reviewing I try to be as fair and informative as possible without getting too personal as I know how hard it is to put on a show like this. So here goes. I went and saw the Sunday night (November 11th) performance of RENT. I was very surprised by the small audience considering how much advertising this show has had. Overall I had an enjoyable experience of Rent. It wasn't fantastic and it wasn't crap but it was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. What I didn't like: The first half seemed very slow and very unenlivaning (I know I spelt that wrong). The opening song of Rent was painful to watch. That song is about tension and the music moves at such a pace that something exciting should be going on. But all the characters did was look either at each other or out into the audience and sing their lines. It was boring. I hated the end. Maureen and Joanne rolled up thier coats in such a way that when Mimi lied down to almost die she looked incredibly uncomfortable and it looked terrible. Roger should have had more connection with her at this point but instead he seemed very detatched and apart from her. The girl is dying the least you could do is touch her. There were a lot of instances where the characters sang out into the audience and I mean a lot of instances. Sometimes it worked but a lot of the time it just made me feel very uncomfortable and made the actors look like they had forgotten what they were suppossed to do next. Out tonight was boring. Jaya needed to let go more and be much more sexual. She seemed confined in that small spaced and clumsy climbing on the railings. The voice was fantastic she just needed the moves to match. Ruth was too young to play the mother and her timing was very off in this performance. Which is disspointing cause I know how talented she is. What I loved: Shane Janek. All I can say is wait for act II. He seemed really nervous at the beginning (and almost out of breath in today for you tomorrow for me) but he hit everything perfect in the second act. Joanne! What an amazing voice. She was fantastic. Every time she sang I was amazed but she really shon in Take me or Leave me especially when competing with the star power of Nikki. She was a brilliant actress and singer and her short dance in Tango maureen left Anthony to shame. He couldn't keep up. The guy who played Collin was fantastic. During the reprise of I'll cover you I was nearly in tears. His voice was so full of emotion and he was so beautiful to listen to and watch. an amazing talent. The staging was excellent and allowed the cast to create very distinct areas for the story to unfold. I also liked the idea of having the band on stage. It was very eariee to see the drug dealer guy slink out from under the scaffolding too. The Christmas bell guy stole the show every time he came on stage. Just goes to show you don't need a big part to be a star. He was so funny and had great timing. Good singer too. The voices. The entire cast and I mean entire cast was fantastic vocally. Couldn't fault a single one of them. The Idols: Nikki. I really think that despite a fantastic voice and a really sound performance, she was not right for the part of Maureen. She looked too young and like she was trying too hard to be comfortable with being a bitch and a slut. She also didn't match up with Joanne very well who I loved. But what a voice. Anthony. What a beautiful voice. He was gorgeous to listen to but dreadful to watch. He didn't do anything. It was like watching Ken act. He was very very boring. Shane. I've said enough. Actually I've said enough all together. I could go on for hours. There was so much that I enjoyed about this show and so much I hated. All in all if you have the cash it is worth a look, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it. Love for now Kate. Looking forward to the backlash.

Simply a great Production

Thanks Neville for your review, I was lucky enough to come over from the east coast to see this show and was totally blown away by the show and the entire cast. I particulary loved Anthony as Mark and Tim as Roger, also Collins & Angel were dynamic. I dont have time right now to do a full review, but I will come back and do that. I actually went to 3 shows as I couldn't get enough of it, and it was on the weekend so found the venue very full, except maybe on the Sunday matinee, and from all accounts this last weekend shows where packed. I actually feel sorry for anyone who didn't get a chance to see the show because of predjudices or that they simply couldn't get there because you missed something special. Eventainment and Yellowglass should be proud of this production the cast were exceptional both local & interstaters. I actually think things were just starting to really pick up through reviews and word of mouth and had it gone on longer they would be turning people away. I just think the story of RENT isn't anywhere as well known as something like say HAIR and there in lies a problem, how to market it. Anyway I have said more than I want to about the production but will return to post my reviews on the actual show and the cast (they seemed like a very tightknit bunch as well and got on exceptionally well).

interesting...

***whether deliberate or not, he managed to capture the detached and disillusioned essence of Mark. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt though, and I’ll put his portrayal down to better than expected acting.*** Just thoght you might like to know that Callea was overheard talking to someone at one of the VIP shindigs after the show, telling them he found it 'hard trying to act detached' as he's a 'reactor' in reality. Maybe the kid *was* a better actor than people gave him credit for.

Dazza would you mind giving

Dazza would you mind giving the title of the book please? I'm really interested in reading about the show as it was conceived. I feel so many people expected to see a reproduction of the Broadway version, or heaven forbid, the film. They expected to see Anthony Callea play Anthony Rapp playing Mark and Tim Campbell play Adam Pascal playing Roger. Musically, to start with, this was a totally different approach, wasn't it? I'll probably be hunted down for this, but I can't listen to the original actors for more than a few bars at a time and I'm really interested in the actual style of performance, the 'business' behind the action, the often comedic approach of the ensemble. It seemed to me to have burlesque elements - was this in the original or was it performed in a more realistic way?

You might want to

You might want to investigate the opera La Boheme as I understnd that Rent is an adaptation of that. Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing. www.tonymoore.id.au

The Show Book

The book I'm referring to is called RENT - it's one of the books that get produced for a lot of the big shows. It includes a lot of the work that Larson did in the conception of his work and the adaptation from La Bohem. It's also got heaps of interviews with cast members and Larson's friends and all kinds of interesting info :) It should be available from any Borders store - or at least they should be able to order it in for you. Or if you live in WA, I know for a fact that Planet Books can get it. It's published by Harper Entertainment and the ISBN (the number that you would give to a book store to order it in) is: 0-688-15437-9 (hc) It's a really enjoyable read :) Hope you find it without too much trouble Darren

Lucky to See the Second Nights Performance

Hiddy Ho All Well must I say I was so lucky to get some excellent seats for this outstanding show. Anyways, the cast was excellent and the sound (inc techs) was excellent. Now that was value for money 4 sure ! I was so blown away by the whole thing, it made me wonder why it was pinned to only show in Perth initially ? Rumour has it, Perth is going to be the testing ground for a number of "unsure" ones. I say "Bring it On!". Catch Ya's on the FlipSide DQ

Rent

Thanks - yes, I'm from WA. I'm just interested in what I felt were the burlesque elements and would like to read about the original intentions regarding the style. I don't know if the comment about La Boheme was addressed to me, but yes, I know that well - but that's really very different in mood to this production. It's Rent I didn't know before now, due to my 'difficulties' with the recorded versions. Thanks for the details including the ISBN. I did also know that term! Any excuse to visit Planet is more than welcome, as it's a long way from me.
