I had occasion to watch a preview of the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre's (MPAC) production of Singing in the Rain last night, and I must say that I was quite blown away by some of the achievements they have made for this show.

The show opens tonight (Thursday 8th November) and will be running for a limited season of 2 weekends. With tickets at only $30 for adults I feel the pricing is quite reasonable, and if you can get a group of 8 or more together you get a discount! (For a group of 20 they give you two free tickets!)

Technical Director Shane Podolski has made some HUGE achievements with this show. I was involved in Beauty and the Beast with MPAC earlier this year and felt that that was a sleek show with impressives techs. My jaw hit the floor watching some of the effects produced for Singing in the Rain.

The cast of 38 performers (many of which I believe are treading the boards for the first time) have worked extremely hard with Directorn Susan Vincent and Musical Director Lindsay Gould to give an energetic performance and breathe life once again into a well loved story. And choreographer Lee Lawrence has set the bar extremely high for what I believe is one of the most difficult shows where dance is concerned. She has clearly worked the long hours with this cast and has produced some spectacular results.

The show features Andrew Thompson as Don Lockwood, Natalie Edge as Kathy Seldon, Adam O'Connor-McMahon as Cosmo Brown and Janine Bramall as Lina Lamont. These four talented young people lead the ensemble in such great numbers as Broadway Melody and own the stage during their featured solos and duets. Of particular note is Fit as a Fiddle in which Thompson and O'Connor-McMahon show off their fancy footwork and Lucky Star in which Edge will fly you to the moon with her sweet, dulcet tones. The on-stage chemistry came through clear and strong between the four leads and Bramall is to be commended for her highly developed sense of comic timing.

Remember that Mandurah is really not all that far from Perth - the drive takes less than an hour on the freeway. It is not often you will get to see a piece of community theatre with such technical achievements. Mandurah Performing Arts Centre's Singing in the Rain is certain to take a page in the community theatre history books - don't miss out on seeing it for yourself.

Opening Night

Hey All, I saw Singing in the Rain last night (opening night) and overall I enjoyed myself. I think that they must've still been working out a lot of the tech stuff tho. There were a few times when stuff just didn't work, like the movies and some sloppy flies and set changes. I reckon once they've done a few runs though all of that will be sorted and it'll be an awesome show. I thought some of the singing was a bit off though. The guys who played Don and Cosmo went flat in a few places, but then I guess they were doing all that dancing. I couldn't dance that much and then still sing perfectly, so maybe I shouldn't complain. Lina was AWESOME! She looked great and her delivery was excellent. The dancing was a mixed bag. The leads did a great job but some of the chorus sequences seemed under-rehearsed. Some of the 'back-line' dancers in the reprise of Singing in the Rain didn't look comfortable either - maybe consider getting them to stand still and sing rather than try and do moves they're clearly not ready for. At the end of the day, I'm gonna try and get down to Mandurah to see the show again next weekend. I reckon that once they get all their techs sorted out its gonna be fantastic. Break a leg for the rest of your season guys :)

singing in the rain

I went to the show, on friday, night, and I really enjoyed, it, iam glad to say not as many hitches, ( none that i could see,). lina was awesome, cosmos, for me was brilliant, yes it is hard to sing and dance, but i enjoyed his performance, just a little thing i felt his hair shouldve been shorter, no long hair in those, days, but i over looked that minor detail, i loved his performance don, yes I felt to, that his vocals were not the strongest. chorus, as always, you get a mixed batch, some were great with personalitys, and others, looked like, gee i wish the show was over. the rain scene i loved, that, the back drops, were brilliant, costumes were gd too overall, i enjoyed, it, and I would recomment anyone to go, and have a entertaining night out, i loved all the dance numbers, esp the trio, well done everyone,

SITR

Ok, I saw the matinee of singing this afternoon and I come away with mixed feeling, while I believe the set and tech was good, the dancing was good, the singing was ok (a few people I felt were a little weak in his aspects but certainly made upfor it in other ways) and the staging was good I just felt it lacked the usual slickness that MPAC productions usually have. Maybe it was just me but there were little things that could have been easily (?) fixed but would have made things a little more clean cut. For example, towards the end when the entrance to the theatre was flown in on the left hand side the fly bar could be really obviously seen. Now that seems really petty but it was little things like that I think can detract from the show. Another example was on the projections, the projection was bigger than the screen and this meant that during blackouts while video was playing there was green lines running over the backdrop. Again picky but hey its my own opinion. Now to some positives :) Characterisation was pretty good all around, Lina Lamont was magnificent as was Kathy Seldon and Cosmo had an amazing amount of energy which was great and it fit well with the comedy of his scenes. The sets were amazing, the special effects were great, and the costuming worked well. Lighting worked well most of the time, just again some minor things like followspots snapping on as if someone had forgot to turn it on at the beginning of the scene and suddenly realised, petty but hey thats me. Overall for a musical which is considered to be so much of a classic I think MPAC have done a good job and I wish the cast and crew well for the second half of the season.

Follow Spot

Just wondering which follow spot cues you felt were a bit dodge... I'm operating the spot, but haven't done so for about 4 and a half years so am eager for any feedback that may help me to do better. Although I will say that some of those cues were meant to be mid-scene rather than at the beginning in order to give the songs more impact... At least that's the way I understand it... Please please please - feedback - I want to do the best that I can. I think the cast and crew of this show have worked insanely hard and I don't want to let them down if I can help it! D

hmmm

hrmm maybe it was suppossed to be how it was then, it just looked a little awkward, I cant think of anything off the top of my head, i do think overall the 'followspotting' was good tho so well done :) Btw I didn't mention this above but massive kudos to shane, its seems like he has worked tirelessly to get all of the technical elements working, the rain was maginificent. I take my hat off to you!

Singin' In The Rain'

Congratulations to Director,Cast & Crew on a wonderful production. The sets, costumes and amazing rain truck blew me away!the choreoghraphy was very professional and hats off to the two male leads who danced these demanding routine's plus singing at the same time well done guys.Best show I have ever seen at the Manpac centre a very high professional standard. The technical side of the productions was a credit to the back stage crew, and the silent movies were a pure delight and the audience's loved them they were beautifully directed. So many outstanding performances I loved the scene's with Lina and the diction coach, and Lina with her Pal Zelda. Also the Cosmo "make em laugh' number what a talented young man, he was just full of energy and lit the stage every entrance. The radio announcer also did a great job, plus the highlight's for me were the three leads singing and dancing "good morning". and the wonderful solo "Singin' in the rain" what a great scene dancing on the stage with the rain pelting down. WELL DONE to everyone involved. If you get a chance go see this highing entertaining show, it closes on sat 17th NOT TO BE MISSED.

Lina Lamont

Was by far my favourite :) She was the star of the show without a doubt. Her solo song stole the show!

singin' in the rain

YES, IT REALLY WAS RAINING IN HOUSE. Oh my god, who would of thought it possible! Well done to you all. Must of been a stressful event. I saw the show on opening night, if my truth is to be told, i did enjoy it , but it seemed like we were at a tech rehearsal. I have been to see the show again and a lot of the pauses and hitches have been fine tuned. As a paying patron, i feel a little disappointed that i took my family and friends on the first night & they did not get to see the professionalism. If we had of attended a different venue, our expectations may have been less.I would of thought such a venue would have had the whole tech thing and band sorted before the show was open to the paying public. The lead Cathy has a beautiful voice and was a pleasure to listen to. Don, i thought did a good job at acting the part & danced magnificently. Though having to sing with Cathy made his voice sound weak.Cosmo was very entertaining and energetic.I thoroughly enjoyed his performance and could excuse the fact that he sang mediocre. But what he lacked there, he made up for in his role play. Well done, young man. My favourite character was Lina, she delivered and sang fantastically. Loved the dance routines, congratulations to the choreographer & all of the dancers. The director must be pleased!Enough of my waffle, In a nut shell; I hope you all enjoyed your selves recreating this charming production Well done!

Closing Night

Hey All, Well, as I said I would, I managed to get down to Madurah two weeks in a row in order to catch another showing of the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre's production of Singing in the Rain. Boy am I glad that I did! What a show it was! I really love Singing in the Rain and I know that it's a really hard show to put on stage. And then of course, everybody will compare it to the movie. I think the team down at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre (I think people call it MPAC) have made a brilliant achievement with this show. I had never been to see something there before now (because it seemed so far away) but I'll be going back. The tech issues that I saw on opening night were gone when I came the second time and the show was just so slick. It was about 20 minutes shorter too! I can't commend the technical director (I think his name is Shane Podolski) enough. BRAVO!!! You made it rain inside!!!! I loved the effect! I wish we had the cpapbilities to do something like that in my theatre. I do stand by comments on the two male lead's voices. They did a great job but just didn't hit pitch on too many occasions. This stood out all the more because Kathy's singing was so wonderful (what a talent this young lady is!!). I think both of you have lots of potential, you just need to work on increasing your support and breath control. Also - Don, do you smoke?? I noticed a slight buzz on the edge of your vocals which can occur from smoking... PLEASE STOP!!! You have talent, but you will never be the best you can if you continue to smoke! (if you don't smoke, please dis-regard that comment, but I think you do) Once again Lina Lamont virtually stole the show. I think tho that her performance was more solid last week. Her vocals seemed to have become more 'crunchy' (I can't think of a better way to desribe them) - probably from vocal strain. Also, her diction suffered a bit - but then I know the show so well that I still understood what she was saying. To the choreographer - you are a genius! To the cast who performed the dances - you are amazing! The dancing blew me away! It was worth the ticket price just for the dancing alone! A special mention to the boy who sang "Beautiful Girls" - you have a stunning voice and fantatsic stage presence! What are you doing next - I want to come see you again! Overall, this was a FANTASTIC show. I'm definitely going to make the drive down again in January for the Wizard of Oz. I just wish I lived close enough to do a show with you all, but I can't afford the fuel - sigh... Thanks again for a great show :)
