Gaslight and Garters
Sat, 7 July 2007, 12:38 amI saw this 'Total Theatre' show last night at the MosArts (Camelot) Theatre in Mosman Park. What a beautiful art deco restoration it is too!
Having been told to bring a bottle and a plate, I was expecting some sort of 'old time musical hall'. I have a lot of time for 'old time', however I found the theatre hard to find and had little time to eat and drink before the show got under way. And under way did it get!
Very rarely do I end two paragraphs straight with exclamation marks. Perhaps it is a little early in the day for me. Nevertheless, I have to say this show, with its blend of old favourite songs, clever script, high energy dance and acrobatics, tied together with an excellent 'Mr Music' pianist, was a totally new, exciting and engaging form of theatre for me. Everyone was brilliant, polished and 'professional' in performance and to top it off, thoroughly charming in their willingness to mingle with the audience afterwards.
If it hadn't been mentioned in the program, I think I would have guessed that this group owed a lot to the inspiration of the late lamented Reg Bolton of Suitcase Circus fame. I may have also detected a tough of Circus Oz as well. I agree that 'physical theatre' is as traditional as any other form - I just think combining it with something like music hall makes it that much more accessible to the likes of me and maybe Gordon. Well done all!
