Hope is the saddest
Thu, 14 June 2007, 01:28 pm‘Hope is the Saddest’ a Mythophobic Production is showing each evening at 6.30 in the Blue Room Studio, Northbridge until 30th June.
Hope (Michelle Robin Anderson) is an optimistic bimbo, whose mission in life is to spread ‘the preachings’ of Dolly Parton. Theo (Nicholas McRobbie) is a shy gay, who is preoccupied by machines. Marion (Natalie Holmwood) is a lonely, paranoid conniver. Their paths cross one day when an accident takes place. This comedy is about how their lives then intermingle.
Jeffrey Jay Fowler’s last production, ‘Zen’s Red Mouth’ won the Blue Room members’ choice award, so a equal follow-up is always a difficult ask. With the help of the two actresses from the show, Jeffrey has produced another very funny off-the-planet piece. He has directed it well and with the aid of Chris Isaacs lighting, and Amanda King’s set with original props which must have been difficult to source, the show sparkled.
The acting was well up to standard, and Michelle especially just glowed.
To be petty, I thought that some of the beautifully written poetic and descriptive dialogue didn’t quite fit the characters – especially Marion’s. There were three unison trialogues (?) where the characters speak the same words at the same time. This always grates for me, although on one of the occasions it did work well.
Very funny, not quite as good as ‘Zen’, but plenty of very humorous sections and great miming. See it if you can.
