I saw The Trouble With Don last night (Feb 27) at the Blue Room. Written and performed by Don Smith. This is simply a great show. Simply made (the set being essentially a chair, fridge, and corrugated iron), and well-delivered. Don may be better known to many on this site than he was to me, and you would understand how he brings such a great physicality to his performance, whilst being a sublime story teller. The essence of the show is Don relating many stories of his life and of how he has gotten into trouble. The guy who always dragged him in was his mate Steve "Aren't all Steves troublemakers?" he asks us?! I particularly enjoyed his relatings of fireworks on Guy Fawkes, a scary run in with Perth's 1970's police force and court system (unbelievable to someone my age that it ever happened, and wait till you find out why he was expelled from Hale... I really loved this show, pissed myself laughing for a large chunk of the night, and was a big fan of Don's requests in each break if we "wanted a beer?". Those in the audience indeed craving a drink were given one from the onstage fridge. I wish I hadn't been driving. And in case you think it was all giggles, a lot of his stories still have me reflecting on current issues today. Very effective Anyways, a great night, and firmly recommended to everyone who wants to see a fun show. Go people. www.theatre.asn.au/production/2007/the_trouble_with_don btw- I am not Don's publicist! I do however want to see his work be rewarded with good audiences. It's worth it. Nev
