Art’ by Yasmina Reza, is the latest production at The Old Mill Theatre in South Perth, and runs until Saturday 17th February.

This community theatre has long been well respected for its quality shows and this one is one of the best. The cast are extremely experienced and it shows, with the best acting, from all three players, that I have seen in an amateur production for years.

Serge (Dean Schulze), a wealthy medic, has bought a large contemporary painting which has doubtful use of colour and composition, even the brushstrokes are called into question. He invites his friends of many years standing, to come and see his proud purchase. Marc (Mark Blades), a down to earth character, tells him straight away exactly what he thinks of this horrendously expensive piece. Yvan (Mike Anthony Sheehy), a new aged sensitive guy, who is getting married the next day into the family from hell and has problems of his own, tries to heal the gap in opinions.

Susan Lynch, the proven director, took the sensible approach and made the play a verbal piece, concentrating on vocal expressions, intonations and moods. The atmosphere oscillated constantly from violence to humour to sensitivity. The use of asides and soliloquies added to the humour. The tricky, lengthy and emotional monologue by Mike, received a well-earned applause.

Mark will need a holiday to correct his blood pressure.

Great acting. Excellent show.
