****Give your money to a "Sweet Charity"
Fri, 8 Dec 2006, 09:18 pmIf you haven't already booked your seats I suggest you do so right away or you will miss a great show!
The whole impact of the show was great. The director and his team did an excellent job on casting, costuming, set design, musical direction and choreography.
Vicki Kirkman as Sweet Charity shone through in a very challenging and exhausting role. She dances and sings well and was ably supported by the rest of the cast. I enjoyed the scene with Vittorio immensely in his apartment, and thought the scene in the elevator was hillarious.
The installation of new lighting at Stirling helped create a great atmosphere with the ability to backlight the stage for the first time.
The sleazy scene in the ballroom with the girls singing to Hey big spender was a show highlight and looked very atmospheric with the girls sillhoutted in the front.
The standout number was of course "The Rhythm of Life" featuring the charismatic Tyler Jones as Daddy Bruebeck.
This number was so intricate in its vocal arrangement and stage movement, that it was over far too soon!
Overall, I would say this was a very tight, well paced production full of energy and emotion.
Congratulations to everyone involved and well worth a visit.

Also really enjoyed the show!
I just wanted to say that I also enjoyed the show "Sweet Charity". I am only new over here from Melbourne and was taken by a friend to see the show and was surprised at how muched I enjoyed myself. I dont usually go to Amature Theatre but from now on I will be there supporting them. Overall, I felt that the show was tight and clean and had a very professional gleam to it, sometimes though you are left sitting in darkness for a while???? Charity is a hard role to take on and I have to admit that This Charity (Ms Kirkman) really tackelled the role and made it hers, without even realising it you find yourself rooting for her and enjoy the ride. As said above I really enjoyed the Elevator scence too, but 2 cast members I feel should be acknowledged are the 2 girls who play Chairty's friends, Niki (Ms Tywman-Perkins) & Helene (Ms Burrows) these 2 girls worked well together and really had a great chemistry between each other, I wanted to see more of them I felt the stage lit up everytime Well done Girls. As said before really enjoyable, thanks to all involved for a great night!

I agree with you.
Did I forget to mention Nicki and Helene? They certainly did stand out and both have real star quality! Great casting choice. Their duet was great and I also enjoyed the "Their's gotta be something better than this" with a fourth girl who was also very strong.
There is one more week to run, so get in there and by a ticket before they are all sold out.
Cheers

I unfortunately found this
I unfortunately found this show lacking. While the technical elements of it were good and the show ran very smoothly, it in no way made up for the lack of enthusiasm from the cast. Unfortunately, a show like Sweet Charity requires a lead who genuinely wants to be performing, and that is not the impression I got from the girl playing Charity in this show. It wasn't down to lack of talent, just lack of enthusiasm. She rarely looked up from the floor at the audience, stepped out of character a lot, fudged dance moves, and sang like she was afraid people would hear her. The biggest shame is that she's obviously a very talented girl, but her lacklustre performance left the audience with an unconvincing character for the show to be based around! Someone needs to tell her to look up from the floor, fast.
In general the supporting roles stood out more. Helena and Daddy were awesome: really convincing and energetic. Some however, not so much...the nameless fourth character who they put into "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This" did not really appear to know the dance moves. Oscar gave a committed and entertaining, if not a little one-dimensional, performance.
The over-choreographed movements did nothing to help the show's genuinity; nor did the Australian accents and poorly thought out costuming. It wasn't just that the majority of the costume were historically incorrect; it was also the fact that a lot of them just made it hard for the girls to dance in.
I cannot understand the decision to eliminate American accents from this show. It actually mystified me. I found it really detracted from the show. And some of the lines made no sense beacsue of it!
There were disappointing house elements as well- such as during intermission when the actors could be seen hanging out of the stage door, in costume, smoking.
I hate to sound harsh, but in my opinion there's no excuse for an unenthused cast. If you're not doing the show because you love performing, then why bother with amateur theatre?

Thanks to all for providing
Thanks to all for providing your thoughts of the show. Whether good or bad it is always nice to get honest feedback from audience members.
This show was a lot of fun to work on, and the cast were definitely an enthusiastic and hardworking bunch. I felt Vicki was an absolute star in what is a monster role to tackle, she marched on in the face of illness and heat exhaustion and never uttered a word of complaint. Lars and Rachel too were so supportive in their respective roles of director and choreographer -- I felt so comfortable working with them, they are both extremely creative and their passion for this project inspired us all to do our best no matter what hurdles we had to leap or limitations we had to rise above.
I feel a little sad that the fun we had onstage wasn't apparent to all audience members, but I respect that everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I see no point in arguing that. I give thanks to everyone who came and saw the show, and again to those who gave their thoughts here.
--- But just for the record, Vicki is a gifted, impossibly warmhearted and enthusiastic girl who loves performing...I felt I had to get that one in, sorry :-)!
