Gordon the Optom1 post in thread

On the outside’, a production from Pop Biscuit and The Blue Room Theatre, is showing at The Blue Room Studio on Tuesday to Thursday at 6.30 and a late show on Friday and Saturday, 9.00 pm, until the 25th November.

The production, which is very capably written and performed by Rebecca Church, is the sad tale of an office girl who suddenly realises how life has passed her by. She recalls the lost opportunities and considers what she can do in the future for some excitement – and indeed would a change in her lifestyle be for the better? There are various fascinating characters, all played by Rebecca. Her mentor (?), a fluffy puppet, guides and advises her.

Brodie Caporn provides the appropriate live background music and inventive sound effects. Emma Caporn’s set is bright, inventive and helps the pace of the show.

The director is Michelle Baginski, one of Perth’s funniest ladies, and she has obtained the most humour out of the script and kept the performance moving at a good pace. However I felt that the writing required editing in places, and that a too many of the laughs relied upon costumes and props which are always fleeting in their mirth potential, and that extra verbal humour was required.

I first saw Rebecca do her amazing, burlesque ‘striptease’ about six years ago in an Old Time Music Hall, it was the showstopper and I was surprised that ambulances didn’t have to be brought in for some of the elderly male members of the audience.

There is no doubt that talented Rebecca has worked very hard on this production, great characterisation, loads of energy and enthusiasm and I certainly look forward to the next, however I was a little disappointed with the couple of flat patches in this show.
