Fyodor's Demons **** 1/2
Fri, 27 Oct 2006, 08:06 am‘Fyodor’s Demons’, a production by Last Seen Imagining, is showing at the Blue Room, Northbridge each evening at 8.00 pm (Saturdays at 6.00) until 18th November.
The story, which has been devised and written by the sole star of the show - Humphrey Bower - is based on Dostoyevsky’s novels. It is a simple, beautifully written story about a man who lives alone and the torment in his mind. It sounds heavy, but Bower keeps the up pace well and magnetically draws the audience in. At first, he subtly alienates the audience, and so immediately gets you feeling some of the confusion and anguish that he experiences.
Bower’s delivery of his monologue is quite an intriguing and chat-like style, rather than being preached at. He very effectively takes you through his varying emotions.
Sophia Hall’s direction keeps the show moving, Nick Higgins’s lighting is sensitive, accurate and well thought-out. The music and fabulous artwork is by Jess Ipkendanz.
It is little wonder that Humphrey Bower won a Melbourne Green Room Award.
A beautiful show that just worked!
