This is a debate we keep
Giving Weight
I admit to weighing an anonymous review slightly less than a named one, but a more important consideration to take into account is the constructive nature of the review. If the comments are useful, constructive and a fair critical review, then they are more valid than others.
The main problem with anonymous reviews is that they tend to be personal attacks and overly judgemental comments without useful substance or content. By naturally giving a lower importance to these sorts of postings, I find I can over-ride the sensitive part of my nature and look past the judgement while I search for the bits I can use.
In a personal example of this (which I will not go into details about) I had 'reviews' posted about some of my work which picked on aspects which;
- I knew were simply untrue,
- Were aspects that I personally could do little about,
- Appeared to focus purely on my personal abilities to the exclusion of others involved,
- Made certain odd statements that were not consistent.
In my view, all these added up to Grudge, and not a valid review.
Anonymity can be a comforting blanket for those who do not want to hurt others feelings whilst being "honest", but I also believe one can be judiciously "honest" and make it into a constructive analysis. Don't just say something was crap, try saying why it was so. If you think something is bad, there must be a reason you feel that way. Critical reviews of this nature can be of great use to a performer/director/etc rather than the throw-away reviews we all to frequently get.
