Santa's Space Christmas

I saw this show last night. Naturally, I took a couple of kids with me - it being a Xmas panto after all.

The Don Russell theatre is a simple but well-appointed purpose-built space, suitable for all manner of performances. I believe it is in such demand that there are usually 2 or 3 shows running there in a single day. This of course means that Arena is a bit limited in its usual lavish set construction. The costumes make up for it though. Also, there were some sound issues early on in the piece which came good as the show went on and did not seem to faze the performers at all.

The (locally written) script is as bizarre as it promised to be, with lots of quick one-liners to keep the adults chuckling and lots of recognisable colourful characters to keep the younger ones mesmerised. True to form, Arena has blended excellent and experienced actors with others less seasoned, some who may otherwise never have the chance to get up on a public stage. This gives the whole production a strong sense of 'community'.

Not the most polished show in town, but well done nonetheless. And of course, the kids loved every minute of it!

Thou spongy guts-griping boar-pig!
