This show was just brilliant ; the sets, the lighting, the sound quality, the costumes, the choreography, the direction -- all were top knotch.
Forget the film version with Michael Jackson, which is dull as dishwater with a mis-cast Diana Ross as Dorothy. This stage version is halfway between the Wizard of Oz and the Wiz -- and all the better for it.
The enthusiasm of the youngsters was only bettered by their talent. There was no weakest link, as the Tinman, Scarecrow, the Wiz and the Lion tried to outdo each other by piling on the ham so thick you could have sliced it and sold it in a delicatessen. Brilliant performances from Dorothy, Toto (a standout) and the 3 witches, as well as cameos from gatekeepers and assorted flunkies kept me watching the whole time.
8 scheduled shows sold out and one extra was also sold out.
I think it can be summarised best by the lady outside the theatre trying to get 3 tickets and crying because there was only one available. 2 production team members gave up their seats to help her out.
A changing of the guard at Gosford Juniors, as this is the final show for some members who are moving on ; it will be interesting to see who steps in to fill the big shoes that will be vacated.
Again, the Juniors have thrown down a big challenge to the adults who will be starting Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers in early March ; it promises to be a cracker, too.
