Last night I had the privilege of watching Playlovers latest show, Arsenic and Old Lace and it was a extremely enjoyable night and congrats must go to all cast and crew in Joseph Kesselring's classic directed by Andrea Devaack.
The play was well directed, and there were some true highlights from last night's performance:
First I must congratulate Kerry Goode and David Young who I believe were fabulous in both their roles. Kerry played Abby and took hold of the play with confidence and intrigue. Her stage presence and ability with humour is a pleasure to watch. David Young played Dr Einstein who was believable and extremely fascinating in his role. (I loved the make-up and the hair, which I believe was done by director Andrea Devaack). Other notable performances were Marie Corrigan who played Kerry's sidekick in the role of Martha and Michael Balmer in the role of Jonathon who both excelled in their roles.
One of my highlights from the show was the lighting design by John Woolrych. The 'blackout' scene with lights just appearing from upstairs, down in the cellar and outside the living room was visually stunning, and gave the scene the mysterious 'feel' it needed.
Tony Ridout and Terry McAuley's set was just amazing and from the audience it was beautifully reminiscent of the 1940s. It was a pleasure to see that the set looked genuine and even when doors were open and closed, the backstage area was masked from our view.
The sound during the show was just enough to add to the 'mystery-thriller' within Arsenic and Old Lace.
Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable production with many highlights during the show.
The show runs for one more week playing Wed, Fri and Sat night at Hackett Hall on Draper St in Floreat at 8pm. I suggest if you have time that you whiz down one of those nights to firstly just see the beautiful set inside Hackett Hall, as well as all the other highlights I've mentioned.
Thanks Playlovers and good luck for the rest of the season.
-The only other comment I'll add is that Karen Robinson should just make sure her wig is pinned a little tighter this week!
