‘Terrorism’ is the latest production at the Hayman Theatre, Curtin, and runs until the 10th September. A joint venture of Be Active BSX and Curtin.

The only real fault with this production is the name ‘Terrorism’ which in this day and age means something far more horrific than that when the Russian brothers Presnyakov wrote the play. Perhaps ‘Fear’ or ‘Trauma’ may have been more appropriate. So don’t think that you are going to see Eastern Europeans fighting and plotting, this is a black comedy; yes Russians can have a sense of humour. Maximum effect of this humour is obtained by the director John Sheedy (last directed ‘Human Remains’ here last year) and his assistant Tegan Mulvany.

Several well established actors including Josh Price, Matt Hardie, Andrew Dunn, Sophie Dunham and Laurie Ashford make a strong backbone for the acting.

A man misses his plane due to a bomb scare at the airport so returns home. Meanwhile a couple are trying to enjoy sex (a fun nude romp that goes wrong). An office is in turmoil. Two old ladies (Kathryn Delaney and Zoë Cooper were outstanding) are chatting in the park whilst watching a grandchild play. The army barracks changing room has bullying taking place, but is stopped by the senior officer – a powerful performance by Bryn Coldrick.

How do all these events fit together? Very well in the end.

Quite a short play, but well intertwined stories. This farce approach to the directing may be a little strange at first, but works well overall. Each actor had several parts and the entire cast managed to create numerous different personae.

Clever set design by Trenna Kerr, effective lighting by Anna Head with powerful and effective sound, designed by Tara Jayne Richardson. A completely different play to the normal run of the mill, but well worth seeing.
