Debbie Does Dallas (the musical)
Wed, 16 Feb 2005, 11:49 amI saw this production at the Athenaeum Theatre Melbourne last night. Basically, it's the same story as the 1978 porno film but without the actual sex and with some musical numbers and dance routines thrown in.
I thought the music was appropriately raunchy, the AV, light and sound design fittingly brash and the set suitably trashy. The acting was good, singing okay and movement great.
Interesting to note that the main character, one of her cheer squad and the director were all WAAPA graduates. Not bad considering the production is Sydney based.
The producers say they are focussing on theatre to attract younger adult patrons. Judging by the audience, they are succeeding: not your typical live theatre crowd at all. More like a bunch of ravers :-)
I suppose it is all good healthy fun, but somehow, try as I might, I just couldn't see much artistic merit in this show.
Thou fobbing rump-fed maggot-pie!
