Re: Review on Finley's - anyone??

The Finleys was a startling success! Why?! Because the best won ! Dare I say Garrick Theatre throughly deserved best production.
It was was surprising also that despite the available seats in the stalls, Playlovers ( bless them!) felt they had to be in the the upstairs gallery, why I wonder? They had the ardious task of coming down to get the minor awards....

Majourie De Caux , whthout doubt the best costume mistress in WA throughly deserved the award for 'The Importance of being earnest'

Three cheers there!

More when the facts are srutinised closer!!!!!

P.SGoldfields Rep are the stuff! Whoa Kal babies!

Re: Review on Finley's - anyone??

OK.
I am a past adjudicator of the Finley awards.
I am a Life Member of Playlovers.
I am even related to the Finley family!

But most of all, I'm a theatre lover and this was a great night of theatre. Apart from all the hooting and applause and appreciation for clubs and individuals who were nominated and won - and from all accounts, deservedly so in each category - the excerpts presented were of a startlingly high standard. We were treated to song, dance, drama, humour, pathos and (as Tom Gutteridge from Black Swan Theatre pointed out) love. Love of the theatre - and surely that's what we're all about?

By definition, Awards Nights create competition. Competition should and can be healthy and happy and I don't believe that clubs choose their seasons, directors, cast and crew simply in order to aim for awards. Call me old-fashioned, but I have faith that the term "Community" still exists in community theatre. Many amateur productions are of a professional standard - again, acknowledged by the Artistic Director of Perth's flagship theatre company - but for whatever reasons, people are content to pursue their love of theatre for just that - love.

At the risk of sounding like Marcia Hines on Idol, let's remember that much love does go into every production performed by our clubs throughout each year and this awards night was a real demonstration of that, as well as the enthusiasm and dedication from our membership from young to not-so-young.

Great venue; Craig's rendition on the ukelele was a most fitting start to the evening; Melissa was suitably glamorous, as was Pres. Kimberley and I reckon people just enjoyed themselves. Why wouldn't ya! It'd be difficult to find such an evening's entertainment elsewhere at the most reasonable price of $15.

Thank you ITA Committee, Finley Adjudicators and all who contributed to this most enjoyable evening of catching up with friends and colleagues all for the love of theatre.

Re: Review on Finley's - anyone??

I would like to thank the ITA committee, the adjudicators and all those involved in the excerpts...not to mention Melissa Merchant and Craig Williams for a great evening.

I think overall the evening could be considered a huge success....especially the smiling bar manager!!

Seriously, well done to all!

Cheers

Robert :-)

Re: Review on Finley's - anyone??

I was at the Finley's and cant believe with all the back slapping going on about how fantastic everyone was no one has given a mention to the two kids who performed from "Storm the Stage".

I thought they were fantastic, and to think that they had both come through a competition with over 400 contestants. I would think that anyone of the company's who received an award would be delighted if they turned up for one of their auditions!

How about some accolade for them.

Re: Review on Finley's - anyone??

Hi Rita

I couldnt agree more. The reason why we asked the kids from Storm the Stage to perform, was to show the ITA how fantastic these guys are!

I hope that when Storm the Stage starts again this year , that the ITA will support the venture and will be more than ready to make themselves available to both help and to grab these guys and tell them where the companies are and how they can join.

There were three of the Storm the Stage winners that performed on the Finley night.

Scott Sheridan, won the Neighbours Award on the night of Storm the Stage.

Two Men and a Donkey

Funny I thought that was covered in an overall thankyou...

Maybe he would also like to thank the back stage staff, the tea and coffee people,Western Power for the electricity,Penrhos college, the cleaners of Penrhos, the gardeners, the security guards, the builders and tradesmen that built the building, the various authorities that allowed the school to be built, The Education Deparment,Rotary of Cannington...hmm...anyone else...oh yes!! maybe even thank Govenor Stirling for starting the Swan River Colony...after all without that none of that would have been possible!

Seems that even overall praise isnt good enough methinks.

Hi Marie. Glad you enjoyed it. I got good feedback. Glad I actually remembered all the words on the night! Here they are:

(To the tune of That's Amore [Dean Martin])

In Perth's Amateur community
There's one award they long to see...

When your play's entered in and you hope you might win, that's the Finley's (that's the Finley's)
If your show was adored you might win an award at the Finley's (at the Finley's).
You'll soon see all the nominees in each category and there'll be some new prizes.
The ITA judges saw each play, now they'll have their say and there may be surprises.
Who'll go home, quite relieved, better known for receiving their Finley (at the Finley's)?
Which play earned most applause in 2004, was it yours?
If you saw all the rest, and you're sure that the best play was your entry,
Then you know there's a chance you'll go home with your hands on a Finley.

Which award will you get? Will your show win Best Set at the Finley's?
It's a contest indeed for Best Other Than Lead at the Finley's.
If direction was tight and the lights were right and the costumes bright and night after night they applauded,
You're quite right to be a bit excited because tonight you just might be rewarded.
Did you incite lots of fights on the website each night over your play?
If you knew all your cues and you got good reviews you're in luck.
Now the judging's been done, let's reveal who has won in each category.
You might go home and boast that your club won the most at the Finley's.

Thanks everyone. I had fun doing it. Thanks to Melissa Merchant who invited me to host, and who did a fair bit of the organising leading up to the event.

Cheers
Craig

Re: Two Men and a Donkey

to be honest, im still straining to understand why the storm the stage winners (not the contestants who won the auditions) actually won.
