The Real Eagles at Subi
Sat, 13 Nov 2004, 09:13 amWe Wish We Were in a Hotel in California
On a dark football oval
Cool wind in our hair
Warm smell of hamburgers
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw the Eagles in the light
The rain grew heavy and the sight grew dim
But it wasnÂ’t gonna spoil the night
They stood huddled in the stage bay
Their manager began to yell
And I was thinking to myself
Stuff the rain, what the hell
A moment to ditch the candle
And they were on their way
Rocking along with the troubadours
I know I heard them say
We wish we were still in the Hotel California
This rainÂ’s right in our face
No hint of this gloom at the Hotel California
ItÂ’s dry at this time of year
ThatÂ’s not what weÂ’re getting here
The whole thingÂ’s an epiphany twisted
But at least weÂ’ll all get a new Mercedes Benz
And weÂ’ll get lots of other pretty toys
To help us feel better and on the mend
How you can dance in this barnyard
This is a bummer to regret
Best you dance to remember
Or maybe itÂ’s a chance to forget
Oh yes we called up the promoter
Please sell them some wine
He said
WeÂ’ll hit them in the wallet, the baby boomer swine
And still the EagleÂ’s voices called out from far away
WeÂ’ll play on until the middle of the night
Justice for the ticket price you say
We wish we were in the Hotel California
This rainÂ’s right in our face
No hint of this gloom at the Hotel California
ItÂ’s dry at this time of year
ThatÂ’s not what weÂ’re getting here
Our bums have got no feeling
Our feet have turned to ice
And we said
We are all just drowning here
Against the weather bureauÂ’s advice
Later in the sound techÂ’s chamber
The boys were tucking into a feast
They decided to play in smaller dives
Where it wouldnÂ’t rain at least
Last thing I remember
We were trying to find the exit door
Stuck in the passages of Subi Oval forever bloody more
Relax said the bouncer
More money and a programme youÂ’ll receive
Cash, cheque, or any card you like
Then weÂ’ll let you leave
With humble apologies to The Eagles, for a fabulous concert in trying circumstances - the only outdoor concert in Oz and it rained! Come to think of it, who was the lunatic responsible for erecting the stage facing west??
