After seeing this production last Saturday(friend from work involved) and reading all the reviews in local papers, West Australian and various radio stations - they are all saying the same thing:-

"This is a must see piece of theatre - probably the best thing you'll see this year ....."

It's funny, sexy, passionate, electric and moving. You'll walk away with more than you went in with - shame it's not running for longer. Last week this week (Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat) Rechabites, Northbridge 8pm. I'm going back for seconds this Thursday

Well done to the cast and crew - at long last "Something different"

Re: BERKOFF'S "E A S T" - SEE IT!

I really enjoyed East too, definately something peeps should see (if it's still on). The c**t speech just near the end was excellently delivered and the performances were well judged realistic portrayals and very well developed characterisations. The show was excellently cast - it could have easily lost credibility if the actors didn't look the parts, but (and I don't mean to say the performers couldn't be pretty in other roles but) they had a thuggish rough quality that lit up the stage.

However, I felt the use of the Prodigy a little to obvious in terms of sound design. For me the Prodigy has a connection to the 90's that East can't ever have - it's too firmly rooted in the vibe of pre-punk working class London. Since the music seemed to be the only concession to modernisation, it kinda clashed with the show a bit, for me. I also thought the movement, usually such an important element of Berkoffness, could have been developed a wee bit - however the text was so well realised that this is but a minor quibble, since the show was one of the most engaging pieces of theatre I've seen in WA for yonks anyhoo.

It was great to see a work like this getting produced in WA. Yay. If you haven't seen it, you should go and see it right now. Even if the season's over. Go around the cast's houses (you may have to look them up first), get them in your car, take them to a vacant public space (perhaps the steps outside PICA?) and get them to put on a private show for you, cos it was engaging and cool and exciting and yay. Yay yay yay.
