Two short plays at the Hayman Theate, Curtin for the rest of this week.

fairytaleheart - is a simple love story. Two shy youngsters meet in an old community hall and discuss their lives and problems. Dean Israelite and Annalise Mack perform very well under the excellent direction of Tegan Mulvany.

The second play, by Barry Dickens, is the most tasteless day in the life of two old crones of sisters. The couple are off the planet, loath each other - but do they really? - language is foul, but the script is hilarious. Even the local prude would have to laugh.

If you enjoy Luke Milton productions then this is a show for you. Tony Nicholls breaks away from his normal panto productions to give you this tremendous show. The couple, Jillian Gilbertson (superb in her first major role) is at war with her younger nastier sister, beautifully played by Simone Hurse.

Two completely different shows, well worth a trip to the southern suberbs.

Fairytale Heart/Mag and Bag: Brilliant Double Bill

Go. See it. Now. *shakes a stapler threateningly*

This is great theatre. It has honestly been some time since I have seen shows this enjoyable.
I've seen Fairytale Heart done before at Hayman, namely in the upstairs, but I have to say that this is much more delightful rendition. At no time during did I start thinking about other subjects (such as how could one start a show with a monkey suit and a bowling ball) or how the play could be improved.
There were moments of...for the lack of a better word: human, such as actors accidently knocking over paint accidentilly, that gave Fairytale a believable life (as the script's credibilty is often subject to scrutiny) which had two young people meet and convey their problems through a make believe fairytale.
At first I thought that Dean having a thick accent might annoy me, but soon found it remarkably easy to understand. <---This is me trying to find things that could improve, but they are thin and far between. Dean and Annalise had great fluid movements around each other...like a choreography of "lets affect each other" and their focus was brilliant (especially with the unpredictability of accidentally knocking one of the many small candles that adorn the set). It had the potential to be that lame corny ol' story, but it wasn't. It was just really, really great.

I had no idea what to expect with Mag and Bag, but my god...just go and see it for yourself. So hysterically funny, loved every profanic second of it! Insult applenty with superb characterisation and moments of classic absurdism (such as a large budgie swing, and angry tea-serving). Tony "the man" Nicholls did a great job with directing the performances...as there was great new work produced not seen before in the actors (granted, one of them I did not know), but both Simone and Jillian are absolutely classic in this dinkem play.

"Weeee! Farkin' Weeeee!"

It was very refreshing to see something so different (I guess I'm talking primarily at the Hayman). These shows could EASILY be made into blue room slots, and have sell-out seasons.

Don't feed your pets. Burn the Tv. Eat the computer.
Go and see this show before it closes.
