No, it's not a case of too many exclamation marks; this play (Peter Flanigan's new 'The Rocks', at Stirling Theatre, Innaloo, Perth) is a cracker -- in fact, a cracker-up, as the audience found and demonstrated at Sunday's matinee. A sparkling script and seamless direction tamped-in the sheer reality of experience behind this play, a reality felt and conveyed by a competent and sympathetic cast who carried the audience through the laughter and suspense of Great Southern farming experience.
And the audience? Yup, they felt it, all right -- like the gruff voice DL which inquired 'What 'appened to the dogs?" as the second lot of visitors arrived at the farm. No, not an error -- one of the dogs might have swallowed a 1080 bait. Is it ever going to rain? Is it going to stop raining before the new fence is carried away? Will we get the Grant for the rockies in time to save them? Will he ever make up his mind about her? What will she decide when/if he does? Will yet another farm be swallowed up by the Big Boys from somewhere else? How serious is the neighbour's illness?
