Scaramouche Jones
Wed, 11 June 2003, 02:58 pmI saw this show last night at the Maj. I was in the back row, quite near the sound man. Lots of people complained to him that they couldn't hear and quite a few walked out. Pete Postlethwaite certainly wasn't projecting at the back wall successfully, but maybe that wasn't what Scaramouche would do.
Having said that, I could still follow the narrative because PP has such effective body language and, even at a distance, facial expression. The story itself and its imagery is very rich and layered like an artichoke. As the character talks, he sheds pieces of clothing as if shedding his past and revealing more and more of himself both figuratively and literally, until the inevitable climax. The recurring theme of the white face is one I found quite moving.
The show ran for over 90 minutes without break however it seemed to me to go much quicker. I recommend it, but not necessarily the back row of the Maj.
Thou tottering rump-fed puttock!
