"SING ON"

I went to the opening night of "Sing On" - Garrick Theatre's current production, and the sequel to "Play on" that they staged about 10 years ago. What it lacked in precision, it certainly made up for in raw comedy. The first half was a little slow and serious - the laugh lines seeming somewhat contrived, but the second half!!!!! I haven't laughed - out loud and heartily - like that for many many years! All of the cast were worthy of note, but those I enjoyed most were -
Alan Bergin whose incredibly mobile features were rivetting - he is a master of the double, triple and other multiple 'takes' and has an enviable talent for physical comedy. Liam McGinniss had a definite presence as the director and was a delight as the bearded lady in waiting! A surprise package was Jarrad West who I feel sure I must have seen before (and would very much like to see again). He portrayed the character Bill in the first half convincingly, but it was in the second half that he really found the true meaning of character!! It was in the persona of the dashing suitor (sorry, I've forgotten the character's name) that he reduced the audience to a giggling gaggle! His contortions with the hat - perhaps a masterful piece of direction? - had me in stitches. Jarrad moves like a dancer, speaks like he's "Shakespeare" trained and holds his audience in the palm of his hands begging for more. Well done to all - a totally delightful piece of farcical theatre.
